I'm still working on writing this story. It has nothing to do with Freelancer per se...
BUT:
At one point the main characters come in contact with a 'Coalition' ship. I make references to the 'Alliance' and a battle at Jupiter etc. My intent is a bit of tounge-in-cheek irreverence in an otherwise serious story. I don't think it matters, but since I'm sure someone will ask: The genre of this writing is kind of "Naked Lunch" meets "Star Wars".
My question is this: Since this is not 'fan fiction', what rules govern borrowing small bits of someone else's work for 'artistic license'? I may someday publish this, but it's really just writing for writing's sake at this point. Should I contact Chris Roberts and get his ok?
Your thoughts? Thanks.

If you are going to keep it private, or distribute it for free, you shouldn't have any problems with it.
If you are expecting to have any kind of retribution (Even by ads you have in the webpage you publish it, should it be the case), you should ask for written permission and save it. Not just the text in case of email, but header and everything, just in case something goes wrong.
