This is a new project, probably for Freelancer unless I find something more suitable. At this point, I have started gutting Freelancer in preparation for the coming craziness. I am looking for a couple people to assist with models and special fx, and if someone has a little coding experience one or two features I have planned will need it. Please note these features are completely feasible, as another mod has done it, but this other mod is somewhat close-minded when it comes to sharing information.
If anyone is interested, I want to make it VERY clear right now that any coding or features that go into this project is 100% OPEN SOURCE. Models and effects are not necessarily, but code IS. I want people to be able to take the work here and build on it or at least use it themselves. It really irks me how close minded people get sometimes. The only thing I'm aiming for right now is to prevent server side data from getting out. I'd rather have one server with some people on it than 50 with none, right?
I didn't post here to attempt to draw people away from Discovery, merely to announce what I'm doing and if anyone is interested. I'm actually aiming to do most my recruitment directly off the Mass Effect forums, provided BioWare doesn't request I stop.
As for me, I have a decent amount of modding experience. I made a TC for the orignal Homeworld based on FreeSpace. Had all the ship models in and hardpointed, was starting on special effects and sounds when I managed to corrupt something and couldn't fix it. This was my first lesson in "Redundant Backups". Freelancer-wise, I know how to edit INI files and such, but am in the process of learning the whys and wherefores of inserting ships into THIS game. Somewhat more complicated than Homeworld was.
Yea, it's copyrighted, but you could make up a name for it and still base it on Mass Effect.
Just like they did with that starwars freelancer mod, couldnt name it starwars but you could still have starwars ships and stuff in it. Besides, as long as you're not profiting off of the product, there's really no copyright infringement.
Anyways, I'd love to help out with this, I always liked how the ME1 codex described space combat in the mass effect universe. Right now I dont have 3ds max working on my new computer so I cant help with modelling, I might be able to help with starscapes/starsphers and planets though (been working on those for disco a little bit lately), and I'll definitely help with the balancing. I've got all the codexes from the game(s) saved to use as reference as well.
Yessss.... So? Tons of mods all over are based on copyrighted stuff. If you use any names, images, etc from ANYTHING it technically falls into their property. Even if you don't use the names and just use shapes (like models that look like the ships) it's the same thing. People use tradenames all the time, it's no big deal usually, unless the developers object. Happens occasionally, but as a rule they ignore side stuff like this unless they think it somehow threatens them.
Sure, feel free to sign up. I'm going to post a thread with links to tutorials, tools, etc for easier reference. I've never done a project involving multiple people before, so this should prove interesting... A big thing I have to investigate is how to create a central repository of some sort that we all have access to.

You want to create something called Mass Effect: Horizons, believe me. If the Publisher sees it he wont be amused and the Publisher I am talking about is Electronic Arts. The title will lead to Confusion, they will definatly do something sooner or later.
"Who is it doing this synthetic type of alpha beta psychedelic funkin'?"
I'm sure they'll get in touch with me if they do. I'm more than happy to work with/around however they want. Either way, I'm not overly concerned with it at the moment, considering it exists only in imaginary form right now. If simply dropping the Mass Effect off the front and calling it Horizons would be satisfactory, that's an easy enough fix.

I think ME works in the way it works though.
No reason to waste great lore though, good luck.
Well, space combat is something that mass effect never really included. ME's space combat system is -described- in great detail in the game's codex, but you never really see it in action other than a few cutscenes that are usually very short.
They'll want you to do something called cease and desist.
Then they'll want something else.
They look like this: 8
Then there are some === and a D
Heh, very possible. But not always. I can cite about a half-dozen examples off the top of my head where a big corporation gave permission for modders to go ahead. CCP gave some people permission to use their Eve models, as one. The mod fizzled out six months later, but things happen, ya know:)
Either way, it hardly matters. I think it's worrying about nothing until they say something. If they give me permission, great. If not, I change the name and go on as planned.
