Peace. The ultimate goal. A goal so common, a dream so under-nourished it has shrivelled and shrunk into existing only in the deeper corners of Sirius. Peace is not the absence of war; it is a virtue; a state of mind; a disposition for benevolence; confidence; and justice.- Baruch Spinoza
The last bastions of hope for it are lost among a flurry of violent souls, destroyed by the demons of their own desire and evil. Peace was lost. Hope, was not.
The true origin of the LNS Champion is widely speculated. Some of Sirius' religious cults believe the universe needed to find a way to balance out the evils, concentrated in our perceptively huge speck of dust. Some others believe, hopefully, that the sole purpose of the LNS Champion was compensate for the in-equilibrium of fault caused by the entity Zelot. The 'true' origin however, is only what will be put here. What will be recorded for the newspapers, history books and schools to reflect.
Companies of Liberty and the edge-worlds became irritable. Pirates continued harassment schemes, and escalation by defenders and hunters only led to bigger ships. Bigger assaults. Bigger losses on a financial, and life scale. An initiative formed in the backrooms. Nothing serious in the beginning, but a concept was imagined - a medium to prevent attacks, but prevent escalation while also cutting losses. Under heavy pressure, the Navy reluctantly commissioned a secondary fleet Liberty Siege Cruiser, largely funded by the eager companies. With barely any armour between the internal ship and outer space, the idea of the ship having even a weapon was laughable. The crew of the conceptualised ship needed to be - different. A crew composed nearly entirely of Psychology graduates and negotiators was organised, and familiarised with the ship. All the while, the technology departments of the companies worked in the background, nearly secretly, giving the ship something near a soul. Every part of the ship, down to the panels on the walls, was integrated into the system. They had truly built the ship. It lived.
Launched with the new AI christened Virgil, and the highly specialised crew the LNS Champion was born - earning its worth, earning its reputation, its future. Defusing volatile situations across Liberty. The ship was given its mission, composed of three key statements:
1. Knowledge is power - Learn
2. Life is precious - Preserve life
and finally, this premise:
The LNS Champion does not start fights. We will never be an aggressor. We maintain our strength in order to deter and defend against aggression to preserve freedom and peace.
Since the dawn of our creation, we've sought to reduce the risk of war by maintaining a strong deterrent and by seeking genuine arms control. "Deterrence" means simply this: making sure any adversary who thinks about attacking us, or our allies, or our vital interests, concludes that the risks to him outweigh any potential gains. Once he understands that, he won't attack. We maintain the peace through our strength; weakness only invites aggression.
This strategy of deterrence has not changed. It still works. - Ronald Reagan
