I came across Final Fantasy X when i bought a new PS2 console a while back in a this thrown in deal. After getting into the game i couldn't get enough, the cheesy battle music and typical romantic story line didn't bother me any more. I've fallen in love with the game and generally miss playing it now i've finally completed it.
Now i'm thinking on getting XII or VII, but is it woth it? Is the battle system any different? Is the story crap?Is it so cheesy that your toes turn into quavers and your fingers turn into wotsits? Not many reviews talk of either of them in reference to FFX which for me is one of the best games i've ever played.
I'm not getting a PS3 any time soon, but i really wanna play another game like FFX.
And no, im not getting X-2 cos it looks like a rape of the original storyline.
You'll not find graphical wizardry in VI or VII but the story line is truly great in both, same turn based combat although how the characters level up is different. It's a standard level progression system in both, gain experience to increase in level. I haven't played VI in so long so I can't remember how the magic and abilities system works, but VII's is based on round stones called materia, each item and armour comes with a limited number of materia slots, some are single others are linked in a pair. Some materia allow you to boost others, those need to be placed in linked slots, others are simple things which just grant straight abilities. Materia also grow in levels using AP, when they reach ficve stars they duplicate giving you another zero star materia. Linking multiple boost materia to copies of the same ability materia grants the boost abilities to all uses of that materia. So adding a boost materia which grants increased power, MP consumption decrease, four uses in one shot to three copies of the Bahamut summon materia then you can go and make a cup of tea before the summoning sequence finishes resolving.
XII is all real time combat, monsters appear on the map, there's no random encounters and if you're careful you can avoid them. Magic and abilities come from the License system, as you kill things you earn license points, these points can be spent to buy new abilities and spells, as well as permissions to use new armour and weapons. The grid is blank to start off with, and you can only buy new licenses that are next to ones you have already bought. A guide book is necessary for XII, especially if you want the Zodiac spear, the best weapon in the game. It's impossible to know which chests you can't open without some form of guide. The story line in XII is possibly my favourite, no whiney bitch of a main character and the characters themselves are fun. Even if two of the women wear clothing that amounts to a belt and a minimal torso coverage and the other is jailbait.

I've played a few of them.. namely the first on NES (ahh the memories), VII, VIII, and IX.
While the first one I rember being one of my first RPGs ever, the VIIth is by far the best one I've played. I played that for months and months. I managed to eventually get the Knights of the Round materia (go Golden Chocobo!), and went in to take on the Weapons but I just couldn't beat them.
Tried the VIIIth, and didn't like the big change of junctioning; couldn't get into it.
Briefly got into the IXth but other things got in the way so I didn't get into it as much as I would have liked.
Ruby weapon is easy mate, Hades coupled with the W-summon materia, Ruby is immune to everything except stop. also go in with two party members down, W-summon Hades then Phoenix. then the next character casts W-summoned Knights of the round plus Hades the rest use the mimic Materia. She'll be dead in no time. Emerald is a bitch, underwater materia is a must the first time until you can figure out how to keep the cow down. Gil toss, 4 x cut and anything else non-magical works. The moment you use magic her hit point's rise 50% and 1.5 million hit points when you're only putting out 9999 at a time is a lot.

I beat Emerald with KotR coupled with quadra magic, and used W-Summon. Pops off KotR 8 times, use mime with that and you are set. Also a good Idea to have Final Attack Coupled with Phoenix or at the very least Revive. Though I admit I have never herd of its HP going up 50% for using magic on it. But if you have an enormous amount of time to waste, you can always get two KotR paired with two Quadra Magic and a W summon and wham KotR times 16. Only down side, you cant skip the summon cinematic and after seeing that bloody summon 16 times you'll be ready to cry. Alternatively, as Del already said, Double Cut FTW. Use a caster on the back row popping off megalixers, haste and wall with two others (I use Cloud and Yuffie to attack and Red to cast) double cut the crap out of it.
VII is by far the best in my opinion, VIII is decent though I was not a fan of the Junction system. IX was just horrible. Hated every second of IX. X was decent enough, was more pleased with the graphics than anything else. At the time it was the first FF to feature such graphics so yea. Currently working on XII, skipped XI, and if XIII is pay to play i will skip that one too.
Uhm, a clarification. I'm looking into possibly getting FFVII, however, there's more than one. There's the original PS1 version, but then there's a second PS2 something something cerberus version. The difference?
FF VII for the PS1 is the original story. FF VII DoC for the PS2 is a continuation of that original storyline that focuses on one of the more obscure characters of the original game.
