Program is only as good as the user is. If you like GIMP and feel comfortable with it, use it.
If used properly GIMP has better utility than Photoshop, and there are much more filters and actions and such for GIMP then Photoshop.
Hate will eat you up from the inside, so hurry up and give your heart to a girl before you get eaten up.

That is utter bullcrap, and ive heard that sentence many times, to quote another artist who swore to using GIMP, "GIMP is great because i dont have to spend time on configuring tool settings. On the other hand, the plugins and brushes sucks".... That same dude went over to PS after using GIMP for 2 years, preaching how good GIMP was... My personal experience with the program is pretty much the same.
What GIMP got over PS is that it takes 5 minutes for you to understand the program completely, 2 hours and with a bit of coding knowledge you can mod the filters yourself.... GIMP is extremely userfriendly and simple, but thats how far it goes too.....
It's good for those that likes things simple and easy, but those who needs more advanced and accurate tools to get anywhere with their works will find it coming up short.....
Actions, i didnt use them that much, those are found in PS too, but i find them to be a lazy way to do what you should be learning on your own.
It is true that Photoshop is superior over GIMP, but, program does not act upon itself.
Pro with GIMP would still be better than noob with PS..
So if he is comfortable with GIMP, let him stay with GIMP, then when time comes and he senses the need that he wants something more powerful he can switch to PS.
There is no need to yell at people how GIMP sucks and things like that.
And GIMP is freeware, while PS is not.

pardon me if it sound like i was yelling, but it sickens me to hear it over and over that "GIMP is soooo much better" simply because people dont know how to use PS....
Yes PS is expensive, so just put it on your wishlist and maybe youll get it for your birthday/christmas
