A special mine dropper that would be more of an area-of-effect disruptor especially for mining ships.
Mine could be dropped in a rock field, and when its fuse runs out, a huge splash area is affected with some insignificant amount of damage to break all the little rocks and extract the valuables.
I can see this being good/working so long as you can only fire the mine once every 30+ seconds or so, and if it is relatively expensive (at least compared to mining lasers). It might save a miner some time when arriving at a mining site, or it might just be an alternative tactic to help get more use out of low-yield fields.
Since it's dependent on what density of mineable rocks is in the area around, it certainly won't be the most efficient way all the time, but if you're getting 1 or 2 ore from each rock shot, it might save a little sanity, if not just a little time.
It was suggested before and I believe it was shut down before as well. Something about the asteroids not being affected by explosions in-game or something.
No. This has been brought up several times. While it is an interesting idea, it is not possible in game-mechanics. Asteroids do not react to explosions, as AJBeast said. No point in checking on it again, really.
If we changed to NPC mining, i.e. NPCs with rock models then it could be done. This has some downsides, like asteroids docking with tradelanes and such.

Not sure where that faction posting on the asteroid groups is anymore but it certainly hold more weight if such an idea were implemented . All this talk of using mines and hitting NPC rocks to tractor in the loot just makes me want to hop in a transport and mine the cargo in NPC traders. Bet I can fill up faster :P
