Major Alec Voelkel couldn't believe his ears as he heard Admiral Malte's announcement. He stepped forward from the line of his fellow flag officers who formed a long, green line with their uniforms, and walked towards Admiral Malte announcing the promotions.
Some lower ranking soldiers clapped, but the officers, Voelkel among them maintained their usual cool manner and strict look. As he reached the Admiral, he immediately saluted, and got the insignia on his chest and arms removed and replaced by that of a Vizeadmiral's.
"Gratulation Vizeadmiral Voelkel!" sounded the Admiral's words.
Voelkel was so touched, so honored by the promotion that he almost dropped a tear on the inside. Yet, he succeeded in retaining the icy, military manners he adopted during the decades, not even a wrinkle moved on his aging face. Brief pictures of the duties he fulfilled, the tasks he completed, the horrors he has seen flashed through his mind.
He saluted once again towards the Admiral, then walked back to the row of officers, with a great notion of pride within his heart.
A very brief, unnoticeable smile curled on his face, as Admiral Malte finished her speech.
