I'd just like to point out that it's perfectly legitimate to "ignore" history. We are, after all, playing a spaceship computer game set thousands of years in the future with aliens and played off of massive stereotypes. England had colonies all over the world, therefore we should give Bretonia random planets and stuff to represent those. Yeah NO.
Gallia is based on France, yes. It is, however, not simply France in space, just as none of the other houses are. Liberty is not ignoring everything outside their own borders, the Outcasts are not allied with Rheinland and Kusari, and Bretonia is not the trade giant of Sirius.
Being inspired by the foreign legion? Great! Copying it directly without taking the differences between Gallia and France into account? Roughly as good as declaring that anyone not Catholic in Gallia would be burned at the stake.
It seems that the actual people doing this have come around without a huge flamefest. If anything, the badness now seems to be "on their behalf" rather than by them...
Exile is not out to slaughter any new faction in Gallia simply to be a control freak. If you're going to flame anyone for trying to have a stranglehold on Gallia, flame me, since I lead the Maquis, have a voice in Council, am second in command of the Gallic Royal Navy, and wrote most of the wiki information on Gallia. Oh, and I'm also a dev, so you can don your tinfoil hats about that too.
Rather, we, as the people who play in Gallia, want to ensure that everything makes sense. As you may have noticed from the prevailing opinion a lot of people seem to have about Gallia, we have our work cut out for us... but we're doing what we can with what we've got. Sirians being tolerated, much less accepted and called better than Gallic nationals... that doesn't fit. A small team of commandos? Sure, why not. Just not Sirians.
The idea here is not to shut down the people. It is to make sure that everything fits as nicely as it can.
Keep at it, activity in Gallia leads to more activity in Gallia. I'm glad we can talk to each other rather than just flame the other side like a few other houses like to do.
I am not speaking on anyone's behalf but my own. I floated the beginnings of a proposal for a Foreign Legion, and had this proposal pointed out to me by Mao as "much better". Riiiight. I never thought it was. In fact, it is hard to read, top heavy, and too grandiose for the Foreign Legion. In my opinion. Nevertheless, as this proposal was done first, I withdrew and stopped work on mine. If you look at mine though, it is simpler, bottom heavy, and way more in keeping with Legione Etrangere.
It was not my intention to lift the Legion wholecloth out of history and into Gallia. I did, however want to keeps it's traditions intact, as the Legion is a very tradition oriented group. For example Camerone day is a week away, on the 30th. They celebrate a battle in Mexico where 65 Legionaires held off a couple of thousand enemies, and then conducted a bayonet charge rather than surrender the French flag. Find me 65 Royal Gallians who would do the same. Good luck.
So this is an idea that won't fly here? Fine. I am not calling Exile a control freak. I have just never encountered players as totally remote PC's who get to say yes or no as to what goes on in a House. Usually an Admin decides these things with player input. To let any player have that much control is just not in keeping with my ideology vis a vis FL gaming. It reeks of meta to me, but hey, I am an old man with different ideas about what's fair and what's not.
If that's the way it works here, that's fine too. I will play around it. Expecting me to like it may be asking a little much.
At any rate I have already SO dropped flying a Royal Gallian on this server. The idea just lost all it's appeal to me.
Players don't saying what can or can't happen in a house. Lore does that. Faction lore, house lore, etc. And the Gallic lore says your idea won't work. You're asking other players to adjust to YOUR idea, rather than you adjusting to the lore of the NPC faction. The players in Gallia have adjusted to fit that lore, but you refuse to. You can't expect them to RP against the lore to accommodate your idea which doesn't fit with the faction you want. Gallic lore says this idea doesn't work. Get over with it, get on with life. Stop trying to blame players because you couldn't adapt.
Show us some faction lore for GRN/GRP/etc that shows that your faction could work without contradicting those factions, and we'll take it into consideration. But I can show you several infocards right now that show Gallia does NOT accept foreigners, and would most certainly not accept a military unit composed of foreigners. This has nothing to do with the players involved. It has to do with the NPC faction's lore, which is something they have no control over. Lore in Gallia was created by Igiss, the guy who makes this mod. He obviously means for Gallia to be roleplayed in accordance with that lore. You don't want to do that, and are now trying to flame people who are saying your idea can't work.
If you did enough research on Gallia, you'd notice the inconsistency and realize why your idea wouldn't work. You can't blame us for your own lack of knowledge about the faction.
Very well, you are likely correct. It is not my intent to flame or dis anyone. My interpetation of Gallia is not in keeping with the official one. The point I was going on is that even the most xenophobic societies, such as the Nazis, have used foreign troops, even as elites.
So, why don't I go and fly my ship, and forget about it, eh? I am not even coming back to this thread. This all started because I disagreed with someone who said this is a much better proposal than the one I was working on, which it isn't. But it is all to no point. Let's consider it dropped, mmkay?
As much as I would like to see a Royalist Foreign Legion, it's not possible with the current rules. Which does not mean it is not possible at all.
Like Exile already said, we had a talk on skype and we came to the conclusion that it would very well fit into the Council Lore, and I hope on more support on this. I will post it soon.
Seby, Exile, and everyone else, I am sorry if I came off as mean natured and thick headed. Life isn't exactly treating me real nice lately, but I'm not making excuses for being a butthead. Sorry. Anyway I can support LE -please- let me know.
The Legion Etrangere has officially started. New faction page will be uploaded soon.
There have been changes:
1) We do not have any contact with Sirius and do not accept Sirians in our ranks, any contact with them will lead to fighting.
2.) We are a division of the Navy that originates from the former shadow organization.
3) In the faction description, anything that involves Sirius has been put into brackets as these could be the future plans for 4.86. But we do NOT have any contact with Sirians, we will stay in Gallia.
4) Looking for members.
