Meaning you can't join unlawful factions. But that doesn't mean that you can't work for them, as a mercenary you can. Mercenary is a person for hire, doesn't matter who pays - it's a job that needs to be done.
It means you can't fly in with a Corsair armada and blow things up as their flagship. If a corsair hires you for a stand-alone hit, you can do whatever you want, as long as nobody knows it's a corsair. The idea of a Liberty Battlecruiser flying out of navy control is a bit odd, but I shouldn't talk, since every one of my ships is pretty well borderline illegal. :$ What's the RP story for it? How did it end up where it is?

My story is now available.

K, getting a single battlecruiser and then flying it as a merc, no prob. But what if the ship is destroyed at some point? Personnel can reach escape pods and such but how do you intend to roleplay the acquisition of another battlecruiser as your previous one will likely have attracted attention and consequently ruined your reputation in Liberty, making it much more difficult to secure your next one. Are we to see a consistent string of thefts of a Liberty Battlecruiser for everytime the ship is destroyed? Something to think about...
This thought also has me thinking for hostile ships obtained through nicely and granted very well written stories. What happens when that ship is destroyed? In those instances a replacement ship isn't easily available, the re-aquisition also becomes harder as the size of the ship increases (very easy to steal a fighter compared to a battleship).
