As far as I remember, we are looking to potentially add some liners and/or human cargo-based transports for variety. Something like that.

And, as far as I remember, we still don't have anything like that coming in the next release. (Correct me / list them if I'm wrong)

I've always been a staunch opponent of moving people (VIPs, Vacationers, Scientists, Refugees, etc.) in most transports. Especially in trains, where it seems to happen most.

But trains and some civilian transports have the capability to support customizable cargo pods!

So, with that in mind, why don't we just do this:

Cargo pods have to be pretty easy to model/skin, no? Why not make a few reinforced cargo pods with windows and potentially some sort of hatch? Make it into some form of feasible cabin for people to travel in. Make it look like airline fuselage, or long-distance train cars, perhaps.

"Reinforced" because a) 4000 hit points isn't enough to begin with, if you ask me, and b) people take up more room than cargo per capita... so having pods the exact same size could be explained as extra beefing up for security.

It's not an optimal solution to the oorp-ness of shoving people in your train's cargo pods, but it certainly helps. I would use 'em.

The current ones are all vanilla, right? Is there a reason/hurdle preventing us from making more?

Hope you like the idea.
Andy

The default cargo pod for transports that can use them.

If you search for it, Jinx already made a few attempts at them, even including vehicle holding cargo. I'm not sure what hapenned of it, but obviously, its not yet implemented, if ever.

Has anyone ever thought of it this way? The people you are transporting are paying to take them to where ever. If it's not broke, don't fix it, and it's not broke at all...

what happened to it:

i think its some ( quite a long time actually ) ago - that either igiss said himself or i heard / read it second hand - that the general idea was to rather get rid of customizable cargopods instead of building on them.

so the idea was dropped to attach customized models to trains etc.

a reason might also have been to get rid of the train as the most common sight everywhere - and replace it with house specific transports, which ... at least at that time ... we were not able to allow such customized cargo in a way the vanilla ships used them.

so from what i remember, the idea was dropped, cause it wasn t important enough to proceed. ( that was 4.84 developement i think )

times might have changed - as we re looking into more options to customize and enrich the shisp ( animations etc. ) ... making such cargopods available for most ships would require a whole revision of the majority of transports though. - and if such a revision wasn t done.... it would only stay an odd feature without any consequences for the RP or anything, cause people would still be allowed and able to transport passengers and crews in their house specific transports that cannot have such containers attached on.

edit:

most things people declare as "oorp" are only oorp from their very own point of view; but hardly ever really oorp in general.

regarding to vanilla - passengers come with a fully equipped cabin - or as cryogencells - whatever. thats why they can be stored like normal cargo. - keeping passengers in a deep sleep is also plausible, cause regarding to the vanilla lore, even travelling from new york to californa takes ages - and not the 30 seconds we players need to get there.
