You can could exit Skype, go to 'C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Username>\My Documents\My Skype Pictures' and cut all the images out into a temporary folder. Then open Skype and see if it works. If it doesn't, replace the images.

If that doesn't work, try repairing or re-installing Skype. Maybe try updating it. Even though the new Version is horrible.

And if it still doesn't work, try to just wait for it for a while. I've had plenty of times when something kept crashing, then I've got annoyed and left it for a while to find it sorted itself out.
