While lurking about the forums and in game, I've found commodities like military vehicles, small arms, and talk about marine commodities. Thus far, they've only been mere commodities with no other significance - but there might be a way to use them for events.
We haven't seen (as far as I know) much action dealing with ship boarding/capturing, base boarding/capturing, or planet invasion RP events due to the nature of the Freelancer game engine. If it would be possible for the server admins or game devs to pick some sort of open source online multiplayer RTS or FPS platform, events can be held for those scenarios (with people to watch or contribute by joining in).
For example, Starcraft has user made map settings capability which allows for custom scenarios to be made. With this, one can stage an event involving a planetary/base/ship invasion scenario by which the defending forces and offensive force sizes and equipments are dictated by the RP dropoff of certain freelancer commodities.
There are incredibly modable open source first person shooter game engines which can be used for players to conduct firefights also based on an RP-dictated event scenario.
Of course, both of these engines are incapable of allowing EVERYONE to take part directly, however multiple parallel event games may be held (allowing for the RP result to be the average results of the battles, or the result of a selected battle). Also, it is entirely possible to record the Event conflict (I do believe that gameplay recordings are considered fair use, correct me if I'm wrong) and post on the forums for all to see.
If implimented, this can be another way in which large ships (Carriers, Dreadnoughts, Cruisers, Juggernaughts, and other pilot-able freudian overcompensation devices), bases, and planets can be enriched by RP.
I'm here to take part in the events happening in Sirius, what software I use for it doesn't matters. Mostly it's the ms game of the past, sometimes my browser or skype.
What you propose here -could- add some to my immersion. It sounds as something requiring a -lot- of effort and organizing. I say good luck on that. Too bad I'm not in any fraction who would partake in any planetary invasion.
