Religions have an enourmous control over their believers. They can state almost anything and as long as it's within reason, any adherents in that religion will consider it valid and true. People will argue, fight and die for these reasons. This is an extremely powerful influence the religions have over their followers. People find comfort and security in their religions so why would they question it?
So it's possible for religions to turn the opinions of few into the widespread order and law of many. This power can be used to guide adherents and/or cause them to do things in accordance to what has been made law in their religious beliefs. However religions can misjudge new things that emerge in the world today. An example would be electricity, the light bulb for example. Particular religions some time ago saw this as a frightening new prospect, so associated it with their knowlege of fear. Their knowlege of fear being, for example, the wrath of god, or temptation of the devil. This adapted opinion soon became a widespread belief of many people, and still today some poeple decide to distance themselves from electrical appliances such as light bulbs. Some religions have retracted their initial views on new aspects of the world and still do to this day.
Many issues arise.
If religious leaders can add and change their views on the world then how can we know what techings/stories of those religions are true, and which are altered to suit the times through history?
What's to stop a single man/leader from using this power for more sinister purposes?
Is it right for leaders to claim this power at all?
The only religious leaders wielding a real power now are mullahs in Iran and imams all around the world... if they say go and kill jews, go an kill christians, go and blow up statues of buddha, their followers obey without asking. This is scary.
When in doubt, look to your own conscience. Can't go wrong with the principle of abstinence from violence and disruption of people's right to choice as long as they aren't violent towards others/breaking the law.
Though mostly all (or all, not sure) major religions have this kind of philosophy, the easiest to understand for me is the Christian one.
Do not unto others what you would not want done unto yourself.
(Don't pull a sadism loophole though:P)
Anyways, the point is, I'm a, if that's the word I'm looking for, a member, of a religion. And quite religious I'd say. However, if anyone preached a message of violence, hate, wanted me to hurt or kill someone, of course I'd have to be pretty out of my mind and stupid to do what they said.

durka durka jihad
Now thats just onsided and unfair not particularly true either.
All the major religions have control over the people under them there is not one that doesnt hold such power to say otherwise is not to see clearly.
If your going to attack this issue you have to be even handed and objective to be onesided you have already lost....
Besides you need to take off the filter the glasses of the Media such things are what is shown on tv and dumped onto your brain so its the instant port of call to make an attack from as its fresh in ones mind yet you have to remember tv doesnt show everything not everything is covered you don't hear all the stories just what your told to think for the better part these days.... There isnt really a credible source out there you have to use your head.
Stepping back from this all Religion has done good and bad things through out history religions of every faith.
I think the worst parts are about the bad things that can be caused by such blind faith in the religious leaders and in the religion itself. That ... that is dangerous and hurts many people.
Crusades/inquisition/suicide bombing.... just a few nasty things... that killed a lot of people did a lot of harm all at the behest of leaders who say its in the name of god yet if god is all loving then why would he ask you to kill and spill the blood of the innocent or low and behold maybe its not god talking and just the leader...
I'm not gonna talk about specific religions because that would be mean none deserve to be singled out because they all have a lot of human blood on their hands. That is what I can't condone they preach non violence and to love thy neighbor yet with the other hand damn innocent human beings calling them heretics cause naturally such a title suspends all human rights. It saddens me that they should draw longer sharper swords than politicians.
No matter my religious views which are my own to keep I am against violence of any kind of abuse and the damning of any human being... To exstinguish a life is the deepest crime because you can't bring that life back EVER ones its gone it is gone never to return that lovely unique individual never to grace the world anymore.
I truly love the way Leaders preach that their religion is the source of all good they claim the good of humanity as theirs when it isn't it isnt the property of any church or religion the Good of mankind is the property of manking it is the pure hearted goodness of humanity not a religion. You fall down in the street a million hands are offered to help you back up your dying of first come across a village in a foreign land the first thing offered is water and food FREE of charge such a tribes never heard of our major religions so hey how did they how did they react like that then if its property of a religion an not humanities.
I've been to a religious school for my education predominantly so i have had my experience in environments
I did however have someone confide into me something that was unsavoury and an abuse of trust had occured an the individual had to leave the church (not the church of the school) even though it wasnt the individuals fault the person got fobbed off and the whole thing covered up but that is one occurence and no stereotypes about religious leaders should be made.
I would say religious leaders do have too much power over a lot of people... people give their trust completely and they stop questioning they stop thinking then they just accept the words given there is no longer a question it is the truth an there can be no other.... When people stop questioning and thinking dangerous things happen and terrible things... its when the control sets and from there can extend extremism and anything extreme is a bad thing.... extremists hurt people they will do anything for their leader because in a sense the leader is the voice of god the guider but in truth you have a human being commanding a lot of other human beings it makes the human beings under the control vulnerable so very very vulnerable.
I also think some power should be taken away from religious leaders because too much power over people damages them it makes a human being go funny and do funny things... go made... be blind to oneself...100% whole given faith given to a leader and such tremendous powers given to a human being religious leader or not just look at what happens you have dictatorships the nazi's(I will come back with more than nazis its 3am here so i cant think of more examples atm) and other such regimes were people have blindly followed an done terrible things for the leader out of blind faith.
People's rights to believe in their religion should never be hindered, all of humanity should be free but never never ever can the spilling of blood be justified... no religion has the right to say heretic on an innocent human being an condemn that individual to death no religious leader should have the powers to kill another human being. People should still question things regardless. An I don't believe a religious leader should get off scott free for any violation of another human being or breaking of the law or right of a human kind that individual should suffer the same fate as the rest of humanity whom would dare commit violations of another human being murder sexual abuse or other they should be locked up.
Love Humanity
Love all Humankind
Love life
Do no harm
The Hypocratic oath that people studying medicine take in vow captures it quite well.
<3 you all every single last one of you sorry if my rant seems pessimistic or dark
you all have a good evening this girl is 3am and about to crash so sweet dreams all
Religion is the way of preaching of an individual to his/her deity.
Organized Religion is the mechanism of turning this practice into;
a) profit making mechanism
b) crowd control mechanism
c) contextual conflict creating mechanism
Organized Religion of today is not that much different of multi-deity versions of their predecesors. Simply, the applications and definitions changed but the core is the same.
BE CAREFUL THOUGH
This DOES NOT mean that organized religion is BAD.
Organized religion is BAD not because of the context but because of the leading figures and/or the followers.
My grandma is a religious person who follows all the deeds of religion and particularly being fooled by what the organized religious figures/representatives/organizations dictate. This doesn't make her practice bad but she is partly being fooled by some shady figurine who has the power.
Almost everyone has an explanation to why the religious figures/organizations have the utmost riches in their bank accounts and living on golden thrones (let this be Vatican or Quabe or the Temple of 12 suns whatever) but none of them ever comes close to telling why that golden throne's value can't be changed to give food to some poor people in Sierra Leone.
This is NOT because religion is greedy but usually what organized religion aims for. Pyramids always have a top side.
People usually confuse very intelligent and scientific people with atheism and such. In reality, being against to religion and being against to organized religion is something different.
These are my views as an agnostic - deism sided person.
