this was going to be added to the thread about what is the best scanner, then i realised i was about to totally hijack the thread if id have posted it there, so i made a new one.
as the topic title suggests, itd be cool to have class specific scanners (maybe an impossibility?)
the larger the ship, the greater its sensor range potential should be, since it will have more room for larger and more sensitive equipment and also have the power core to support it.
Types of scanner
Broad Spectrum
Balanced
High sensitivity
Broad Spectrum
these scanners would have a massive detection range, scanning on larger frequencys the scan waves have the strength needed to cross large distances in space and can peirce smog and other navigation hazards much more effectivley however due to there low frequency are very limited in the range in which they can identify smaller individual hardpoints on a passing vessel, as well as determining the contents of its hold.
good for vessels that require movement and evasion, as well as vessels used to hunt others.
Balanced
as its name suggests this scanner provides a middle ground between Low and High frequencys, enabling a decent overall target identification range and a good target information gathering range, since it doesnt specialise in either its ranges in both are limited.
High Sensitivity
the high sensitivity scanner uses higher frequencys that use up more energy faster so they do not travel as far, however are much more effective at identifying a vessels capabilities, its higher frequency range makes scanning much more clear and precise than the low frequency scanner, meaning the holds and weapons of vessels can be locked onto and checked at a much greater distance. good for Embargo upholders, mercanery and bounty hunter vessels, giving them the ability to size up an opponent much further away.
Classes
Capital ships should have the furthests sensor range out of the larger ships, the larger the further they should see. in fighters the smaller the ship the greater its sensor range in order to make up for its lack of fire power, and to increase its abilities as a scout.
so out of the 10 classes below the overall sensor ranges would look like this
Classes 1 - 10, organised to prevent abuse from lower classes
Super Capital
center of the formation, largest power cores, most advanced sensor equipment, gives them better ability to command the smaller vessels within a fleet
Ships: Carriers, Barge, Certain other Admin only ships,
Large Capital
designed more for combat, less advanced sensor equipment but still powerful by any means.
Ships: Battleship, Battlecruiser, Dreadnought
Capital
smaller power core and mostly dedicated to weapon fire (apart from the transports) however still contains powerful sensory equipment.
Ships: Destroyers, Cruisers, Heavy Cruisers, Large Transports
Small Capital
much smaller power core still with the capability to uphold a much better scanner than most smaller vessels.
Ships: Frigates, Gunboats, Freighters
Killer
small vessel mainly focused on the destruction of vessels larger than themselves requiring almost all of their power to be focused on weapon fire, sensor range should be limited
Ships: Bomber, Gunship
Challenger
small vessel designed to dish out alot of firepower in a short space of time, main focus is weapon fire however has more core to spare for sensor enhancement
Ships: Super Heavy Fighter
Hunter
a balanced smaller power core that can support both a semi-decent power output for both sensors and weapon fire.
Ships: Very Heavy Fighter
Seeker
Seekers retain the ability to inflict damage and destroy other smaller ship classes by combining good sensor strength with powerful weapons
Ships: Heavy Fighter
Scouter
scouters have a great sensor range yet limited by its tiny powercore still being required for weapon fire use
Ships: Light Fighter
Runner
not designed for upfront ccombat and more situational awareness, this class sacrifices most of its power core to its sensors and its engines as opposed to weapon fire.
Ships: Interceptor
This does sound like a fine idea. Gives the flagship an even better ability to prepare and co-ordinate strikes on enemy targets. These additions should make organising fleet-wide battles so much more easier by allowing the flagships to order attacks on certain ships by certain shipclasses. (Order Bombers for example to attack the nearest cruiser or all the fighters to target a certain bomber before the battle has begun)
Err... problem is ~ there's a set distance from the player ship where other players and objects spawn :/ it's more or less the max for regular detection range in normal space (discounting areas with interference :/)
In order to make different scanners meaningful, they'll have to nerf a lot of the existing scanners so that they can implement any real differences in scanners
