As primitive said, there is no higher price than at Detroit Munitions. If you want to check, either Click on the commodity ingame, and click traderoutes which will give you the most profitable place to sell the commodity or try downloading Freelancer Companion.

afaik, there are only two bases that buy gold.

i think this is an oversight, cos it means pirates can metagame, cos they know your route, and it also leads to oorp cargos, like luxliners carrying gold.

should gold be sold at varying prices at different bases, just like every other commodity?

New York, New Berlin and New Tokyo should have same buying prices. That would help miners/haulers.

That only works if you've docked on every station in the game, otherwise you'd never be sure. Could the Temple of the Revenant offer a better buying price for gold ore? You'd never know.
