I was playing a while ago, and while in the New London System I encountered a group of hostile NPC Universal (who are angry at me due to a Bribe mess-up.) ships. they, in turn, go the local (NPC) Navy ships on their side (Who are unfriendly due to the same bribe mess-up.) and destroyed me. It is my understanding that i can re-spawn and keep playing if an NPC kills me, i usually don't, for RP reasons, but I planed on it for this time due to the nature of the conflict. then i looked at the announcements right before I launched and noticed that it said i was killed by a player, I checked for him and it said he was in the New York system.
So I guess what I'm asking is this: has that ever happened to anyone else, if so is it a common occurrence? and did I do the right thing by logging off for four hours as is customary if killed in PVP?
You did the safe thing but this just looks like a server glitch. I would have simply relaunched and continued on my merry way if it was just NPCs present. 'Though you could have doublechecked if that player wasn't actually present, -also- got vaporised, and respawned in it's last known docking location, in NY.
Wide awake in a world that sleeps, enduring thoughts, enduring scenes. The knowledge of what is yet to come.
From a time when all seems lost, from a dead man to a world, without restraint, unafraid and free.

You may have slipped the fact a player was also attacking you, if your screen was full of red signs and your radar had more than one page (Pirates in areas with a lot of buoys or depots will understand me). If you have a screenshot you could see it.
If that wasn't what happened, and you were really killed by npc's, it's odd. Did it say a player name? "X was killed by Y (gun)"?
I've had that a few times. It's best just to ignore it. But when you're trying to kill people for bounty money and that happens, it is really annoying...
[17:45:39] Wolfs Ghost (Murphy): Tom, you have problems. Go kill yourself.
[19:25:12] Johnny (Jam): Tomtom, I will beat you with a spoon.
[14:22:56] Prarabdh Thakur: KILL HIM WITH A SHEEP.
[17:40:48] Eagle (Junes): Tom should be slapped with a spoon.
[11:32:18] Warspite: Thank you for being so awesome Tom. <3
[18:17:36] Metano: I love you tomtom
[20:06:24] Warspite: I will seriously give you epic head.

It did tell me that i was killed by a player, "X was killed by Y (gun)"
Unfortunately i do not have a Screenshot, as it all happened too fast, although I think that it's safe to say I was almost certainly killed by an NPC, as the only shot that did real damage was the one that killed me, the NPC battleship's main gun.

I hadn't thought of that....
Edit: I did not see a message saying that the person had been killed too.
It's just a bug. It doesn't happen that often, but not that seldom either.
Just shrug it off. I don't believe anyone will sanction or report you for it. A good thing to do as a preventive measure is take an SS where the location of that player is visible along with the SS of your death message.

yes, its a server glitch.
You can always talk with the appropriate players just to be sure in pvt chat for various events. Not only it is polite, but it also avoid confusion that may lead to wrong judgment.
