She had lost power, life support was failing. No guns, hull breach immenent, shield stripped, armor gone. Meri continued down the checklist. She had sent out an S.O.S. to the 101st but the signal was too weak to have made it.
Damnit, Meri thought, this is it...this can't be it! I'm supposed to die a a glorious battle! Not by the guns of a stupid Corsair! Son of a ... Another wing snapped. The last Corsair and his Titan had been destroyed, but not before crippling her like this. Through her viewport she could see she was heading for a collision with an asteroid. She braced herself and ejected her escape pod.
Meri was floating. Despite the mortal fear of being trapped in the void of space, the weightlessness was calming in it's own right. She was in Corsair territory. She would not be taken in by anyone of them. Alive anyway. She reached into her flight jacket and pulled out a vile. A smile spread across her face. Meri wouldn't be alive today if it weren't for Dr. Grey. Ironic how his mixture would end her life.
The poison will take its time, but you'll neither be able to speak nor move once it starts to take effect. It's very effective in interrogation situations. It holds it's own secrets. You need not be afraid. You will just simply fall asleep, my dear, Dr. Grey had told her. She popped off the seal and looked toward the pieces of her beloved sabre floating around her. Meri tipped the vile and drank.
Slowly, her body relaxed and her mind opened. A weird sensation. Her life passed before her like a slideshow, like one of those toy viewers she had when she was a child. Every person who'd made her smile flashed before her. There was Romer, the crazy hauler who could and would go anywhere he pleased. At the time, she'd been on the run because of the experiment. She'd become a GC after that fiasco. She tried to smile but her muscles were weakening.
The slide show played on. Sister Onyx, the one who welcomed her into the arms of the Phantoms. Glock, Bloodfrenzy, Lord Darkstar, Virus, Dalamar, Obliterator. All of their faces flashed briefly before her.
And so it continued to the next part of her life as an Outcast. The scenes played out for her with amazing clarity. After her Phantom attack on Planet Cambridge, she was saved and given new life by SiN|Tech. Dr. Grey appeared, then Bernard Fokke and then the Corsica Outer Sanctum. The Outcasts had welcomed her as one of their own. The image of her destroyer, aptly named Eidolon as a tribute to her fellow Phantoms. Miguel, Lope, Juan, Alejandro. More and more the images came.
Meri was no longer afraid. Her eyes closed and the corners of her mouth twitched. She would have smiled if she could.
