Okay, so I've recently started RPing with a couple of military characters (BAF or RM). I understand that typically indie pilots are considered part of the reserve fleet, with the official faction forming the primary fleet.

My question is what have people done or what is accepted in taking a rank as an independent pilot? I've noticed the factions are made up entirely of officer ranks (usually), so would we tend to take on NCO ranks or just RP one at choice?

Any suggestions are good, I've kind of just avoided the issue until now. But rank is kind of important in identifying a military character.

You could roleplay as a Secondary Fleet Recruit or Admiral, or anything in between depending on your RP. Though, any Primary fleet pilot has more authority than you, no matter if you're Admiral and he's, lets say, Major.

Very interesting point on the complete lack non-officers. My guess would be that these non-commissioned farmhands would be part of the ground troops. Hence why we don't see them out in space often.

Take a look at the official faction's ranking system, and give yourself the appropriate designation for the ship class you intend on flying. Except Admiral - we already have far too many of them.

Depends what you're flying, I guess.
For fighters, bombers, it's probably a good idea to stick with lower ranks.. Flight Lieutenant, Fight Sergeant, just make something up xD

For gunboat and higher, which all have crews led by a captain, your rank would be at minimum Captain.

Of course, it's possible that you've reached higher in the ranks, become a Commodore, an Admiral, etc.

Do whatever you like really, but if you don't do it well, don't expect your rank to be respected by other players, let alone the official faction.

If I play such a character I always look at the official factions ranking system and pick a rank from there. If its a fighter its going to be one of the lowest possible ranks, if its a cap its going to be the minimum rank that allows to fly this ship. It would look strange in my eyes to have a fleet full of Admirals;)

That's the newest safety precaution. When the admiral falls in battle, there are 20 spares to take over.

Seriously though, pick a rank that suits the ship and go along with it. Just don't try to overdo it like people already said.

From what I have seen of the Rheinland Independent Fleet structure, everyone is either a pilot (fighter craft) or a Kapitaen (capital ships). If you actually RP and have a name for your character, its Kapitaen regardless of what your flying at the time. Well... thats what I seem toe get called...

If it's similiar to a real-world force, I'd imagine all pilots as well as commanders of larger ships to be Officers. While you could certainly RP an NCO, they'd more likely be acting in a support role on larger ships (Communications Officer, Loadmaster [Cargo], ect.). That said I'm certain there are plenty of circumstances that would allow an NCO to take command. You could always have a Warrant Officer out training newbies, for instance.

That's my two cents.

May you live in interesting times.

thats true tho not allways commen,in my past experences anyway>if your good and know your role and everything you need to sometimes they wil lrespect it if they are indeed lower then you and most of the times they simply reply saying they have senoritity or its not your branch or whatever

i myself am a major and in the past a few people with navalcommander rank or under have listened to me its rare though and it really depends on the order you give

,like asking that such and such disengages or whatever>

imstressing this tho
DO NOT PUSH YOUR LUCK i amwell known and have built up my roleplay, ingame anyway>i have inrp friends in the [LN] and =LSF= they respect me i respect them, thats the main reason sometiems they listen to me

In most real world militarys (air forces), fighter pilots usually hold an officers rank. The probably most important reason for this is, that in the military your salary is tied to your rank. Piloting fighters is a dangerous business, and noone in his right mind would do it for a grunts salary, so pilots start with a rank with an appropriate salary tied to it (in most cases 2nd Lt. if I'm not mistaken?).
Thats also a reason for Majors and Colonels still sitting in fighter cockpits.

Not true, when you are an indie, nobody but the corresponding militarys factionleader or his second in command can order you around. If I'm RPing an indie Major and some official factions Captain comes and tries to order me around, I can tell him to stick his head into a place where the sun doesn't shine if I want to, and it'd even be in RP.
If he's of a higher rank, he could, in RP, order me to do something, but ooRPly, I could still tell him to bugger off or do it himself.
