No, but don't take the Freelancer ID as a carte blanche to do anything you want to and say you're not Bowex. I hate it when people do that. And the KNF will still shoot you, and you'll still be rephacked hostile to Kusari.
You can't be more independent once you have a faction ID. It's normal to follow the IFF used by the same faction but it's not against the rules to have another IFF as long as it isn't conflicting.
If you have a Bowex ID, it means you work for Bowex. A Freelancer IFF won't change that fact.
You should decide on whether you want to be a freelancer or Bowex pilot.
If you take Bowex ID you will still be unable to trade with Kusari and you will probably get the same treatment as any other Bowex captain from Bowex enemies.

Well you can combine your IFF and your ID in order to promote a desired RP you want to have for your char. For example, in the current situation we can assume that this character is partially employed by Bowex but he sometimes also makes some runs as an independent/lawful trader.

That's exactly what I was trying to say but didn't. So it's doable. Cool.
I think this also illustrates something that people don't realize. Your ID says who you are and what you do for a living, while your IFF is more along the lines of who are you working for.
For example, with us of the BHG now having a barge (so large), we have hired some 'independant contractors' to work for us. These are assorted mining vessels that have a miner ID - because the guys that own them are miners. But they have Bounty Hunter IFF - because they work for the Bounty Hunters Guild. They are NOT tagged with the BHG tag because they're not bounty hunters - they're simply hard rock miners. Just working folks - that due to WHERE they're working, need the bounty hunter IFF.
In your case, you're using a Bowex ID, and flying a Bowex ship. It would be tough for you to say that you're NOT a Bowex employee - I would recommend going with the Bowex IFF as well. If you want to be an independant trader, then get a BWT with a Freelancer IFF and indy trader ID. Most corporate transports are going to run corporate routes - not doing their own thing.

To me, the IFF is something like the transponder signal you are sending.
I imagine navy transponder codes are reserved only for navy, and hard to copy/fake.
But Freelancer IFF is just a trasnponder code that says "I work for myself".
So if I am LSF or Order and I want to work under cover and not send a "Im am this and this" code, why shouldnt I be able to send the "Im a Freelancer" signal.
Maybe, IFFs could be obtained from factions by asking for te right to send their transponder code, like you can ask them for certain equipment.
Like an Order ship tells IMG that they want to be able to send an IMG singal to be undiscovered in their operations, and IMG may or not grant it, just like they may or not grant gun requests.
What do you think?
And how is the rule situation at the moment? Couldnt find anything about that, just about equipment.
