Jonah Hayes was born in winter 778 A.S., one of the coldest winters recorded on California
Minor since the beginning of record keeping. His parents both worked for Universal, as the life on
California Minor was too hard for a single parent working. When Jonah was 5 years old,
his parents had saved enough money for a ticket to Manhattan - their dream of a new life
on the prospering main world of Liberty was as close as never before.
They afforded a small flat in the suburbs of the capitol, renting a nanny for young Jonah,
while both parents continued with their jobs at Universal. It could have been a happy life
for young Jonah, if it hadn't been for the Dark Matter Storm which arrived in Kepler in
784 A.S., destroying several transports which were passing through the system. Jonah's
parents, workin on the freighter McKinley at this moment, both lost their lives when the
Dark Matter storm tore the ship's hull apart.
Having become an orphan without any known relatives, Jonah was transferred into an orphanage
where he spent his days avoiding the bigger and stronger children who started bullying him.
At the age of 16 he got a small job as a delivery boy, moving loads of luxury goods and
real food to the homes of the rich, who resided far above the slums of the lower classes.
Sometimes he got warnings from Liberty Police Inc. for small crimes like pick-pocketing and
shoplifting.
On his 17th birthday he spent his first time in a juvenile prison; he had been arrested while
delivering a load of luxury consumer goods to a well-known society lady (inside the goods,
invisible for him, were hidden some dozen pills of Cardamine; the society lady of course was
"terrified and shocked", and she explained to the newspapers that she "would never have thought
of this handsome young man to poison her with the worst poison of all", and "how could anybody
dare to claim that she had ordered this poison", etc. etc.).
While he spent some time in juvenile prison, he learned that there was no way for him to lead
a peaceful and wealthy life as long as the upper classes wiped their feet on the man in the
dirt (and also because of his criminal records), so he decided to go for the tightrope walk.
When he won a century-old Bactrian freigher in a game of "Texas hold'em", it didn't take him
long before he started dealing with the hottest goods on the market - Counterfeit Software,
Cardamine, Artifacts.
