I was set up by a freelancer the other day (Curse you Ender!:P)
And when going through a trade lane that was supposedly 'clear' (Curse you again!) I ran into a pirate trap.
They gave their RP opening and did everything on their part, but I was so shocked and scared all I could think was *spam countermeasures and cruise the $%@^ out of there*
I got away - barely, but am I supposed to actually say something in reply before I do anything?

I ask, because if they didn't need to do their RP opening, I probably would have just been dusted. :$

I apologize to those that were there if I broke protocol, I was just too scared and too short on credits to consider anything else
(And I Was also responsible for the safe delivery of 315 passengers)

You did everything all right. You're trader. You're supposed to catch a chance for escape.

EDIT: However... I think you should throw any line of saying goodbye or any other epicly teasing phrase.

Once they do their demand, and such. You can do anything to get away without a word. RP has been done. You can even open fire at this point without a word.(i love doing this to the 2mil or dai fools). All the rules say about engagement is they have to RP a demand of some sort. Trader need not speak a word.Running probly saved your ship, and load.

Ah, I *was* going to say something, but I didn't want to jinx myself.
They used the trade lane to intercept me at the gate, but I used counters again to throw off the CDs and dock at the gate, they shot me but the cut-scene invulnerability kicked in.

They didn't follow me through, though, can they only use jump holes?

Wow, nice. Well within the role.

Were you actually scared of pirates?

no, you did everything right.

Role play isnt only typing, its also actions, like some people like to say.

Just trying to get away without talking is excellent RP.

I would even go as far as saying that once someone has CDed you and told you he will kill you if you dont give him 2 mil, it is perfectly good RP to just open fire on him. The necessary amount of RP has already taken place by him saying that he will kill you.

Everything went exactly as it should.
To answer your question, yes pirates can use tradelanes and jumpgates that same as you can use jumpholes.
Whether it is InRP is a matter of opinion.

No, they don't have to use jump holes. The pirate could have followed you and attempted to finish the job.

But for future reference, please try to say something before just cruising off. Some people, like myself, pirate for the simple interaction and communication of it all. When I catch a trader who won't even speak to me and just runs away, I feel a bit depressed about the whole thing.

That's what I was worried about, I mean, I'm all for RP dialog, but the whole thing took me entirely by surprise, especially since I was told it was clear by someone whom I was going to pay once I delivered the passengers.

All I saw was a pair of ships with the [rogue] tags and shortly after a 'friendly greeting' and a cruise disruptor.

I really was scared, I haven't been pirated in over 2 years

Sucks to be u. I am not loosing money just to make someone else happy. Nor cause they do not want to do the mindless trading to earn their own. 75% of all pirates i have met in last 4-6 months were all lolwuts, with little to no RP. So i prefer to unleash my Shires 12guns the second i here that lame arse "2mil or dai" crap. I am not saying i do not give a pirate a chance. If i am kicked out of a lane i will RP,if i get RP. But as stated. If first think i here is "we want your money" i just blast away. I have taken GB's this way,and killed fighters, and bombers before they even react. If this in considered poor RP by some? to freaking bad. The Pirates who RP well should teach the poor ones, and maybe traders would be more inclined to be nice back. I am by no means saying traders are inocent. I also have pirates, and got loltraders too. Both need a set of guidelines on ways to act,and treat others. I am a very vengeful person, and 1 bad pirate,or trader will cause me to treat others badly for rest of the day,and i have seen many others same way.
Basically traders job is to deliver goods any way they can,and pirates job is to get money/goods anyway they can. If both RP'd nice? it would be a wonderful place, but you will always have lolwuts.
