I've noticed so many people playing the Discovery mod, and it really makes me happy to see Freelancer in such a state of prosperity even after all these years. Back in my day, I can honestly say I never expected to see a single mod with hundreds of people playing, much less all of them playing on one server. It's a great sign, and gives me hope for the future of a game that I expected to be dead when I returned not long ago.
Since this forum encourages advertisement of different mods, I would like to advertise one that I have played for years. It's hard, it's unforgiving, and it's kept me coming back for more time after time. Ioncross: Total War has recently seen something of a revival and it seems that, for all intents and purposes, this is its last hurrah. I want to prove their staff wrong and see if I can't find some brave souls here that are willing to give something new a try.
Total War is hard. This mod is only for people who want a challenge, who want the opportunity to roleplay like they never have before, to get some sparks flying and ruin some pants. IF YOU DIE, YOU LOOSE YOUR SHIP. The game kicks you from the server and puts you in an escape pod with the reserve funds you have built up from buying "economy points". These points, in addition to boosting your team's score, act as a buffer between you and having to make a new character. This way you can keep the reputation you've earned and have a fresh lease on life.
So what's the premise of this mod? Basically, it's Rheinland versus Liberty. There are only 5 systems in the entire mod (and one is a newbie/starter system)... but each system is huge, very well designed and will keep you more entertained than most vanilla FL systems ever could. You join either the Liberty or Rheinland team and start at the bottom of the ladder, and work your way up. Killing pirates is profitable, since they infest your home system and drop decent loot (kind of like how most Discovery ships drop pilots to sell, just uses a different method). Most people will do this before headed out to the warzone in the systems between Hamburg and Texas (the starting systems), where the real challenge begins. Team play is HIGHLY encouraged in this game, and the rewards can be just as great as the punishments. I'll let you guys find out more for yourselves on the official website and forums.
Roleplay opportunities are legion in this mod, and in previous wars (back when the Total War mod was in its prime) it was loads of fun to play as your faction. The bonds you form when flying with someone who's watching your 6 make this an exceptionally unique mod, as you get a thrill here that you won't find in other games. The rush you get from killing a hard NPC patrol fleet with a group of your buddies is as intense as limping back to base, half your weapons gone, only 10k away from safety and your afterburner fuel is at 5% (you have a set amount of fuel for your afterburner and it only recharges when you dock). Sound intense? Add a patrol fleet that's hot on your tail, keeping you from using your cruise and whittling away at your shields no matter how awesome your evasion skills are. Will you make it? Will you live to repair your ship, sell your loot, and take the fight back to the enemy? Or will you wake back up in your faction's starting base, out of luck and with no credits to buy a new ship, forcing you to restart your character?
And PvP... well, you can imagine. Roleplay here is about who sees who first, and who kills who first. Shady deals and exchanging looted weapons can happen... but can you ever be certain the enemy will not betray you for their own gain?
Let me reiterate: this mod is NOT for the faint of heart. You will triumph. You will loose, and probably rage. That's part of the game, and for me, part of the addiction. Because risk is very real here, just like the rewards for excelling as a pilot and keeping yourself and your buddies alive are. You can trade, you can mine, or you can fight. No matter what you do, you'll be part of a community unlike any other.
Couple of quick tips regarding installation:
* YOU WILL NEED A FRESH INSTALL OF THE GAME.
* The mod loader scans the directory to ensure that nothing has been changed before even launching. Make sure said directory is completely unmodified.
The Mod is back to 1.0. It's great fun and a lot of old vets returned to give it a go for old time sake!
If you really like a challenge please come try out Total War.
