So here I am, having just returned home from the cinema after watching Sucker Puch. It was truly an amazing visual experience, much like Zack Snyder's previous 300. Words can't describe how much I enjoyed it, it'll become the top film on my 'To Buy Bluray' list.
But after trawling various film review sites, including the infamous IMDB. I found a lot of people who just don't like it (in fact it only received a 6.7 -ish from IMDB) and I can't understand why. In my opinion, it was on par with 300 both visually and conceptually. It was stylish, steampunk and action-filled with some insightful, albeit slightly depressing, supporting background.
How about you? Did you like it or dislike it? Tell us what you think.
Indeed the soundtrack was epic, since the whole movie relied heavily on it as well as visuals.
Why don't people like the plot? I found it satisfying, albeit slightly depressing, which ties in well with the fantasy by representing symbolically what was really happening in the real world and reflecting the main character's emotions. It also explores several themes such as corruption, abuse and friendship which I thought were subtle but nonetheless present. It also related to the film's title "Sucker Punch" where it contained elements of surprise throughout.
Simply, Sucker Punch was unique, stylish and unlike any other contemporary fantasy films out there. This is what I liked about it. The supporting background was good with symbolism and subtle references to themes in the era it was set.
I can't stop thinking about it, maybe I'm just over analysing it.
