Sirius was one section of the Damm K'vosh (getting used to new spelling) Empire. We have no idea where they were based. They could have been based in Sirius, or they could have been based elsewhere. It's an open question, so either of us could be correct in that regard.
well, I think you've got to answer two question for that kind of thing:
Is it realisitcally possible: probably/maybe, nearly comes down to ask did aliens landed on earth?
Will it fit in freelancer: in my opinion... not really to could be. Develop a bit more, despite me being a bit negative here, I might be interested.
Will it be benefical to this community: not sure about that... we already have many factions, there is a reason why we have restriction to new factions - let alone new races!
convincing.
Now let's say we get these new aliens...
you want them to have their own systems and ships I guess - and possibly stations... which will all take some modding. Will admins agree?
if they do, then I'd interested to hear more about it.
Since it has been a few days since anyone has posted, I have went ahead and started an RP introducing "The Zell" a feral race that is in the time period equal to WWII on Earth. There are two sides explained in the RP the "Darklings" and the "Brightlings"(Working name on that second one). As said before, the reason for the war is stated in the RP.
The RP is here if you are interested. The race does not speak english, so if anyone is interested in joining and meets up with a Zell, they will not understand you. They believe the stars are the gods looking over them, so when a shooting star happens, they believe that the gods fall out of the heavens, but counter themselves and allow them to stay in the sky. However, when a mysterious "god" starts to fall and doesn't stop falling, the fighting stops, and they are put in awe. A god has fallen.
It's up to you guys who you want to be the "god" who fell, or maybe it's just a piece of space debris?
Please allow me, has a relative new-starter in the server, to post my opinion here. A pocket of life in sirius, in my opinion, is EXTREMELY unlikely due to the simple fact that, much like Praetyre said, Sirius was once a part of the Damm K'vosh Empire. If we take into account the actions perpetrated by the Nomads, and regarding them as weapons and tools of the Damm K'vosh Empire, they move and act towards anihilation and destruction (albeit sometimes in a slow, manipulative way) and do not seem to accept interlopers in their own territory. Any race that existed in Sirius is likely to have been destroyed (the lack of ruins/civilization traces other than the K'vosh Empire seem to point to this), wiped-out or erradicated entirely. Any pockets of possible civilization would be those who: a) are too primordial to pose a threat to the Empire, and thus, we're not attacked, b) Evolved from the times of the K'Vosh Empire, but still, today should pose no more threat than a civilization in pr?-industrial days.
The K'vosh seem to be conquerors and erradicators, to the point where they leave behind engines of war and destruction (Nomads) to erradicade any species that threatens their territory.
One could claim, easily, that aliens merely came from other point in the galaxy, but another problem arises here. In the end of the game, during the cutscene where the Artifact is being analised and the K'vosh Star Map is discovered, one of the scientists claims that "this empire seems to have conquered most of our galaxy". The K'Vosh possessed such an empire that they required the Nomads to take care of their territories while they were away. So, chances of a surviving civilization, after the discovery of the human one in Sirius (thus, initiating the game) are remote. Plus, these civilizations would be running FROM the Nomads, not plunging into a system-like Sirius that is still plagued by Nomads and their "seemingly allies". I tend to think that the galaxy, our galaxy, is nothing more that a star-struck filled field of debris. An after-war from the K'Vosh advancement.
There are ways of using all of this data to introduce some degree of alien civilizations in the game...
- The run-away remnants of a K'Vosh-destroyed civilization that wandered into space and stumbled upon Sirius.
- An alliance of alien species (much like the Covenant in the Halo Series) that arrives into Sirius to request the Human assistance and participation in the Alliance against the Nomads and the K'Vosh Empire.
- A small clan of alien spaceships from a naive civilization who only recently achieved star-engines and is experimenting in long-range space-flight for the first time.
- A small civilization (pr?-industrial), with tribal and war-like features who survived the initial K'Vosh onslaught, are found in a stranded planet and are given ships by one of the main Houses to assist them in fighting the Nomads.
...
The possibilities are truly endless, but now, please allow me to express my personal opinion. A completly new and revamped "alien civilization" would take away part of the flavour of the game to me. Why? Well, leaving aside the fact that it would require a 5***** roleplay, personal characteristics, distinctive features and such, it would take away one of the main elements in the Freelancer experience: The fragile hope. Mankind is alone. We have alone squandered, faced and won against an invading race of alien caretakers, and God knows what the K'Vosh, who can be around the corner, can do. I don't really want to see messianic-alien races, or secret star cults. I just want to believe that Mankind can only rely on itself this time. On our weapons, our ships. Our own hope.
Of all things said I'll put my practical view on this. First of all you will need to create completely new content for the game. Not only it has to be done correctly but also fitting into the style the game has, a task a lot of ship makers seems to have trouble with. However ships is only a small part of the content package, it would also require to make new base models, new textures, new starscapes, new systems. Now there is not much space left even for existing factions let alone completely new, and these limits pose certain restrictions on to what can be added or not. Let me ask you a question: can you do all that? The answer, most probably, will be "no". Without experience, skill and ability to put it up it stays where it was, a mere idea. Suffice to say the ideas have little value, its their actual implementation, a manifestation into the virtual world that costs much time and effort. I'm struggling to create new content for the game for the Nomads to fit empty space that developers were intended to make but left because of the time constraints put on them, and that's a difficult task even for someone who has spent many years in game modding and design. And they are absolutely canon and played vital role in Freelancer, and even then there are barriers and difficulties with pushing them further to higher level. So, what chances do you have then here? Posing this question simply out of practical implementation issues, the most important part, and I have not even started about roleplay yet.
The reason why imported ideas never work here is because they are baseless, have no fundamental story package attached to existing material, to, shall we say, legitimize them within the boundaries of Discovery roleplay. "Out of the window" concepts, they have little to no chance here, no matter how long your stories are. Much to say, walls of text are boring to read, tends to be either too descriptive or too disjointed by putting too many characters.
I'm afraid with these tendencies a story starting with "we have just arrived to Sirius" will be on the same shelf as with "I stole ship" and other *ahem* roleplay.
To rephrase one famous US senator: "And again, the Discovery is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck.".
there is already a feral (looking) race in freelancer. The Monkeys, whether people like to admit it or not, ARE from vanilla freelancer. sure they were an easter egg of sorts but hey...they are still there.
Stranded on planet primus and looked down upon by the rest of sirius for being "different". After a chance crash of a passing ship they studied the vessel for years until eventually they were able to reverse engineer it's technology. a fledgling race with limited resources, the Monkey's (i would call them something else) strive to make their way in a galaxy where they aren't welcome....
