The black background is kind of an eyestrain for me. Especially over long fights. So if anyone knows how to change the black background to gray once background-stars are turned off, please share your knowledge with me.

There is also a mod that lets you put the hud boxes back to the edges where they belong, after you switch to widescreen res. You'll see what I mean when you switch.

About grey background, you can always change starspheres to grey manually, if it's allowed.
