Igiss has said that he won't be removing ships from the Mod. So the homeworld ships are here to stay. my question, in regards to the ships being made for version 4.85, is this:
is anyone willing to "refresh" the homeworld ships? aside from the Outcast destroyer they all are VERY blocky, lack detail, and are in need of some reskinning. Seeing as the ships are existing i'm wondering how easy it would be to touch them up a bit?
round off some of the sharp edges, add some depth to the model, update the skins.
it would be nice to have them ready for the next version but even though it's not a whole lot of work per model, there are a lot of models from Homeworld.
i say this because i love my Turanic raiders freightor, but DANG is that thing blocky!
well, the outcast destroyer is nicer, cause it is from homeworld 2, while pretty much all the other ships are from homeworld 1. - mind, some of them are extremely well done. - the kushan heavy fighter is excellently modelled and skinned, - just doesn t fit into FL too well.
are we allowed to reskin them btw? - isn t that a violation to the copyright? - if they are "remodelled" - they can aswell be replaced. after the last "survey" - we may get some ships replaced hopefully.
The HW ships are very blocky because Homeworld is played at a tactical level and the ships take up small spaceon the screen. Freelancer gives you that up close just behind the ship view. It would be nice to reskin the Homeworld ships. The addition of FL markings and recolorings would help integrate these ships better.
Because of the up close behind the rear view there are other ships in Disco that need rearend remodels because they look bad in the rear.
i figured you could open them up with one of the programs (can't remember which one you guys use) the modelers use and just change it. i wouldn't think you'd have to worry about copywrights. it's from another game and another company....if they haven't got us for copywrights yet then they aren't going to.
Got your PM, Dreygon...somebody can probably reskin them, since we have to have permission to use the model and the textures; nothing at all is mentioned about using them in conjunction. As for changing the model itself, that's probably violating copyright, and Davjack is right, it probably wouldn't work too well anyway, since that's how those ships were originally designed. So, retexturing, yes. Remodelling? Not likely.
...and just for future reference, don't look at me, I don't texture my own ships:$

yeah i'm look'n at you mister!!!
ok, lets take the Turanic Raiders Freightor for an example......
-all the edges on the thing are sharp. if they could just be fillet'd (CAD term) out.
-the rear of the ship is completely flat. if something could be done to unflatten it. maybe extend the engines out or bring the ship body in some.
-texture is....."ok" if you like child art. i would prefer to have a FL skin put on it.
-heck i wouldn't think adding a panel here or there just to give the thing depth.
in my head these would be easy fixes, but i'm not familair with the programs used so it could be difficult for all i know. the thing certainly wouldn't be the same as the original.
and what's this talk of copywright stuff? who's copywright? Sierra (the maker of homeworld)? not sure i follow that line of thought.
There are ways to get around the copyrigt anyway. If the name is changed to something making an in-joke and mockery of Homeworld, it would be classified as satire, making it all okay, since satire is considered fair use as regards to copyrights.
You don't see Family Guy getting sued for remaking Star Wars.
if it's a worry about homeworlds maker's copywright......i may be wrong but i would think they wouldn't be happy about their product being used in a competitors game in the first place. even more reason that they should be modified.
