So, I heard awhile back that Phate broke the $1,000,000,000 mark through piracy. I was highly interested in seeing how profitable the Mercenary/Bounty business was.
However, I seem to be at a loss for things. Most Bounties are limited in a single system and require a variety of things. etc.
I was wondering if any of the hardcore Mercenary archetype players of Discovery were willing to take me under their wing and show me the ropes.

You'll find that blanket bounties bring in more money consistently than assassination bounties.
For example; Liberty Bounty Board. You can get money for killing any unlawful inside Liberty. and even certain groups outside. That doesn't sound too restrictive, IMO.
Edit: For it to be profitable as an income, you will need to devote most of your time to collecting bounties.

Or you could help your clients in-game when they are present. Immediate pay without the fuss. Usually more pay too.
Making money as a bounty hunter or merc is just as possible as making a living on piracy. The only difference is that the BH and Merc has a harder time killing their mark. A pirate fights transports, mercs fight fighters and bombers. And they usually aren't alone. The same cannot be said most times, of the mercenary.
If you want to actually make money as a Merc/Hunter your best best is to join one of the existing groups. That way you don't have to go through the whole ordeal of getting on all the boards that stack yourself. Stacking bounties is the key.
Unless I"m mistaken, Silver has claimed close to 2 or 2.5 bil in bounties. Getting that much from hunting is not what anyone will typically get. Thats a combination of lots of luck and being handy with a SNAC. I haven't done any calculations in quite a while but I'd say I'm in the 400-500 mil range since I joined the Reavers. One thing to remember, though, is that you won't make trader or miner levels of money but you can definitely make plenty to get by on.
It seems like many people are directing me to the Reavers- Are they not invite only/closed recruitment or am I mistaken?
As for stacking bounties- I was looking at such, which would make Corsairs the most hated faction in Sirius? Bounty-wise at least.
From what Stygian has also detailed- Would a Bomber be an adequate ship for a Merc? Considering that they can go toe to toe against both Capital Ships and Fighters. Although I only used a Bomber in .84. Has the effectiveness of Bombers vs. Fighters been lessened in .85?

Since someone said my name, i woke up. (seriously, i have this weird nagging sense) i'll post.
4bills actually with the ingame pays and media work (which i normally did for a cheap price). Add that to what i won with Kaze in the MercWars and you can say i do love my job.
Problem is, as Justin said, a miner/trader in the same amount of time probably makes 4, 5 times that.
No worries though, since i don't spend it on caps.
No big money sinks in my accounts.
:smile2:
So ye. Join a company, get to know the hunt, trade some death.
And Justin, i am reaaaally handy with the SNAC.
Don't put me in fighters though ._.
