Hey,

I recently created a Vigilanti character, which I intend to use with either a light, or heavy, fighter. I have never flown either before and so i thought it would be quite a nice change.
I am however unsure as to which i'd be more suited too, i'm no expert at fighters thats for sure, far from it, but i've found light fighters to be much more of a pain, to fight, than heavy fighters. Then again the players i've fought in light fighter tended to be more comfortable to their ships than any i've fought in heavy fighters.

So in short, which would any of you recommend, heavy fighters - and if so what type (and possible weapon layout) - or Light Fighters - and again if so what type (and possible weapon layout).

Any suggestions would have to be within the civilian or borderworld ship/weapon variety for me to use.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. :)

The Marauder, if you want to be cool.
The Spatial, if you want to blow yourself up.
The Arrow, if you want to dance.
The Sabre, if you want to kill anything.

Let it burn.

Well, there isn't a huge difference between the two types, in my experience. A decent lf pilot is going to be out maneuvering a hf pilot of similar skill, but it's a question of degrees. Either pilot is going to be out maneuvering everything else in the game. The big question is if you are capable of the precision and patience needed to take a lf up agaisnt heavies, very heavies, and bombers. A lf can do it in the right pilots hands, but it's not going to be quickly decided. I'd suggest going with a heavy instead, it's a little more forgiving to the newer pilot.

As for what and what loadout, that depends on what you are going after, really. The Falcon and Kingfisher are probably the most popular choices but my personal favorite is the Moldy Crow. It's a bit big for a hf, but it handles well enough and can pump out a bumload of hurt. It really fits the vigilante type, too.

As for loadout, well, you'll likely find the hfs a bit underpowered if you have only flown larger ships. I suggest, for the crow, four shield busters (three primaries and the turret), two hull busters, a missile (shieldbuster is my choice but either works for our purpose), a cruise disrupter, counter measures, and a hullbusting mine.

You are generally not going to want to joust, since almost everything you face is going to be tougher than you. So e-kill and strafe plinking away at the enemy shields while dropping a mix of cruise disrupters and missiles. The goal of dropping a mix of both missile and cruise disrupter is to make them run out of counter measures before you run out of either type of missile, though it's more important to have a reserve of cds in the end. Once you have his shields down and he's not botting em back, start dropping the mines on him. Occaisionaly letting him get you into a joust, or a semi-joust so he runs nose first into it is an acceptable way to go about it. These tactics aren't fast, but they should get you the results you want.

It's likely others can give you better combat advice, and this is much easier said than done, so you probably want to wait and hear what others say.

Fly a Falcon or an Eagle.

You'll hate yourself if you become the 34234134th Sabre pilot, sooner or later.

LF's can survive fights quite a long time if you just dodge like hell. But aiming with them is more difficult aswell, because of their agility. By the way; LF's will have increased cruise speed in .86. I think it was 420.

HF's are still agile, but the lack of lvl 10 mounts make them boring in my opinion.

VHF's are the ones, which everyone uses. Healthy mix of good firepower and agility, which makes the aim more easy.

Considering the switchblade has slower turning than the sabre, its sort of useless atm. That being said, casting sabre and eagle aside due to their rediculous turns for their size, Scimitar LF is a nice one. 2 class 9 and 2 class 8 debs + deb turret = annoyance. Alternately, tigershark= OMG WHY...CANT....HIT.....*facedesk*. Arrow with debs and nukes if you wanna be just annoying, and any sirrian HF if you want to die to a vhf that outurns you.

HF need more love.

Starflier! Cause no other ship is more awesome. I mean seriously, the XENOS fly it. Epic ship.

EDIT: If you can get your hands on an LPI Liberator...

Not that they'd fit your character very well, but personally my favorite light fighter in 4.85 is the Hussar... Favorite heavy fighter is probably the Bayonet. For 4.86, I really like the look of the Seth, but ultimately the Hussar will probably remain my favorite just for the nostalgia value (I used a cavalier in the freelancer campaign from the time I got to bretonia all the way to the end of the game). Favorite heavy fighter in 4.86 is definitely the new marauder.
