They had left Dur Shurrikun two days ago. Lena knew something was going on, something probably bad as she noticed Matts agitation. Matt had been her mothers assistant for more than a year now. A spectre she delivered from the nomad influence after she short-circuited the control device they had installed on him.
The first thing they did was going to Freeport 11 and change of ship to make sure they couldn't be tracked. It was a small grizzly freighter of the Liberty Navy Kate had found drifting in Alaska when its pilots got attacked by the nomads with psychic waves, at least that was what Kate assumed. She had refitted it as an all purpose house ship in the event things would take an unexpected turn.
Matt used to be part of the Liberty Navy before his mind got abducted by a spectre that was already within the Liberty Navy ranks. He never remembered what happened between the abduction and his deliverance caused by Kate. For now, he was cautiously piloting the ship through the most unpatrolled parts of Alaska.
"Hey uh... Lena. Come over here will you please ? I've got something to give you."
Lena was in what Kate built as a kitchen. There was a picture on the fridge that seemed to belong to another era, a picture where she was very young with her mother and her father. She gazed at the picture for a moment before going to see what Matt wanted.
"Your mother told me to give you this when it will be time. I consider that it is time, but I wish this would never have happened."
He took a dusty letter that seemed to be here for a while, and gave it to Lena.
"What is it ?" questioned Lena. "She never told me except that only you shall ever read it when it would be time."
Lena isolated herself behind the counter of the kitchen and opened the letter.
"Hey my love.
If you're reading this, then Matt thought it would be time for you to understand what I have prepared for you after my departure. If you think you have a better plan, then go ahead and do it. But first, promise me that you will never forget who you are and where you come from. You know the plan. You know the reasons that forced me to put you in danger and you know what you are meant to accomplish. The knowledge of the nomads is not simply knowledge, it's also a tool that we can use against them. I wish we would have been able to spend more time together, with a normal life. But life decided otherwise, and threw both of us into this suicide mission. If you're reading this, then it means our mission has been accomplished, and you made it out alive. They will likely infest me to prevent any leaking of information, but they'll never expect that I doublecross them with your departure.
Stay true to our values. It isn't because you are way ahead of the common human that you aren't human. Being human is a way of life. It's your actions that dictate if you are human, or a monster. Do not, ever, forget this.
I have sent you to David Hale. He doesn't know you, and he sincerely doesn't expect that I send him the most precious thing I ever had in my life. You'll likely wonder why. David Hale is paranoid about the nomads and wishes their total destruction. But unlike most people that I have encountered, his desire for their destruction does not make him blind. He will protect you like his own daughter, not only because of the value you may have in his eyes, but because he knows how dangerous everywhere else will be for you.
Your first task will be to help him to take down Versalife. I have attempted to make him keep an eye on them, but it seems it has failed. However my indirect suggestion to his sister seemed to have worked and she started digging. For everything else after, well, you're smart enough to figure it out without me.
