From what I hear, if we don't have the express permission or fair use policy under the materials we use, will it affect the mod if the bill passes?
I mean, we're modding a game that Microsoft and Digital Anvil made, and it contains ships from other games, or copies from other games. Like the Homeworld ships for example.
Political argument to the side folks, but would the SOPA affect this mod, or really, most mods in general?
I'm also pretty sure a lot of us use images from other games, I mean, my avatar is from another game.
It's doubtful that Microsoft will pursue anything here. Far more likely that another game, movie, or tv studio would see a copyrighted image linked on the forums here and go that way.
Personally, I despise avatars and sig images anyway, so it wouldn't be a bad thing if the rule had to become "no images whatsoever."

Not anymore it doesn't. Those crappy homeworld models were the first to go, and all other imports will at some point or another follow suit.

I seriously doubt it Discovery will be affected. If only for the reason that it isn't hosted in the nation where this law is appliccable. Server's if I'm not misstaken in Germany. Europe tends to still have a more relaxed law in these regards. Besides, SOPA's designed to combat video and audio content sharing. Discovery doesn't fall in that category.

I believe there's a lot of things that would or could happen if someone were to stumble across this and report the site/mod. Igiss would probably be sued, the name would be gone and U.S. citizens would have to put in the IP, images would be gone, and depending on how the ISPs and Invision Power Board Feel, they could restrict access or take it down all together.
Welp. Guess no 4.87...
EDIT Hmm. The above is said in a form as if everything was here in the U.S. Which, it isn't. BUT! We have been reaching across countries to do this sort of thing, and we probably will if SOPA is passed. Just look at megaupload. Isn't it down 'cause the U.S. went to NZ to do it?

Yes i believe so. But realistically speaking i think what would happen is IPB would just be fined substantially, but if they don't regulate things themselves then IPB would be gone.
Though honestly, it's a Bill in Congress. The common man such as ourselves don't know the FULL effects or perhaps NON-EXISTENT effects that could be inside the Bill. So, i guess we will wait and see..

Yes. And I expect the Russians to be most cooperative in enforcing American law on it's citizens...

Myea, the copyright gulag? Besides, the name "Discovery" isn't copyrighted. Even if it was, it's too generic to withstand a challenge.

Doubtful. Again, the server is hosted in Germany. The forum is just freeware software running on a server. Just like the game server itself. Most of our content is developed from scratch - heck, if the game wouldn't stop bawling and crashing with the original mission content removed, we'd have axed that as well.

Megauploads is a commercial site dedicated to one purpose: Filesharing. Comparing that to a nonprofit online gaming community is really just... silly.
