If you are talking realism there would be no fire because people are in space where it is cold and also there is no oxygen for the fire to burn unless it came from inside the ship which would last for less than one second.
But for the sake of a game here. I think we can let a little fire pass. I didn't play this game thinking I would be playing NASA Combat Simulator here. Not like modern day space ships could even begin to start shooting things. They can't even build some of them right that's why they explode. And they wouldn't be firing laser beams they would be firing bullets or rockets.

Yeah, if you have under 4% (or so) hull left, your ship catches fire, but it can still fly. That happens too with AI controlled ships.
Hmmm... Sadly i wasnt thinking about taking a screenshot while running away from that pirate with about 2 pixels of hull left. I managed to jump, but i was way too worried about he coming from behind to stop and take it :-P in a camera
