So for a while now I have been pirating in Gallia in one of those little Brigands freighters, the Courier, I love that little thing, she is fantastic. However as of late I have been considering exploring more pirate options. The little freighter is nice, I like being able to smash the transports I have run into, and I also love that I outrun them...
But I have been looking at both the l'Ane and the Asco, if I got a l'Ane it would be my first serious attempt at making a ship that is armed for cargo piracy... not sure what her load out would be, 2 transport pulses and the rest type 2s? Also the Asco, I have not flown a gunboat since the last game mod so this would be new for me, I would likely go with an all basic or all Council load out and see how that works.
What do you guys think of the ships, what do you put on them for equipment, and how do you think they handle, both in general and in the rather dangerous Gallic environment?
You should ask Renegades for a couple of lessons of turret steering in Asco since they are quite good in it. And if you manage to find a wingman, go for Brigand Heavy Fighter. Two of them can be quite effective.
2 guns 2 glaives a missle and a pulse work nicely on an asco. As for the l'ane dont bother to pirate with it, its weaker than any gallic transport. Plus its plant is pathetic.
Best bet would be to use an eclipse bomber or brigand id/iff asco.
And yeah the Renegades, <strike>why are their Ascos in Rheinland?</strike>
I have flown the Brigand HF as well, probably one of my favorite HFs in game save for the Bayonet, it's a good ship for sure but finding a wingman is not easy these days.
The L'Ane is more of a smuggling vessel than a raiding transport. My own L'Ane is outfitted with Type 3 turrets, which I'm yet to test against... well, anything apart from occasional NPCs. Asco is capable of sustaining Council Turret loadout with a bearable nerf (last I checked), besides, it has an EMP torpedo in a dedicated slot. Turret-steering Asco with turret zoom is actually quite good, or so it would seem.
If you prefer to work solo, your best bet would be either keeping your freighter or using a bomber, be it Eclipse or Jaguar. Both have different advantages: Eclipse has only 2 forward facing guns and 2 turrets which can fire in both directions, also it has a dedicated CD slot. Jaguar, on the other hand, provides more slots for bomber weapons (which allows you to install one Hellfire Rocket Launcher without losing firepower comparing to other bombers, which have only 4 forward-facing bomber guns. Jaguar's back-firing turrets will be largely unused though.
I have the following ships:
- Asco with Council Turrets and Asco Torpedo
- L'Ane with Type 3 Guns
- Jaguar with one Hellfire Rocket launcher, SNAC and CD (the remaining guns are a mix of EMPs and Energy Cannons)
- Full-EMP Eclipse bomber with a CD, Nova and SNAC
- Mistral (2 Carbines, 2 Pot-de-Fers)
- Courier (Carbines and Arquebuses)
These are the ships I could actually use for pirating traders in Gallia. Never tried using Cuirassier for that purpose. For me it's more of a combat ship, so I keep an MR on that thing.
The Jaguar is really awesome, fast and able to hurt things you have to hurt, a L'Ane with Type 1 and 3s works pretty good as well, its a nice Gallic pie rat transport.
I personally dont like the Asco at all, its cruel.
about Jaguar? the only drawback i see on it, is the fact its rather big for a medium bomber, but, 5 forward firing bomber guns can give you and excellent EMP firepower, enough to take down a gb shield in less time... of course, that will take down the powercore, the other option could be to mount 4 EMP and a rocket launcher...
about Asco? is a beast with council turrets, in the case of being nerfed, as my own, the basics do well too, anyway, if you're going at 100% the P/R setup (or P/G in the case of gallic faction) is very good too, think the asco as a Kuex with less firepower but far more agility and better hitbox, and you'll be going good
