Capital ships are supposed to be gigantic bad-ass mighty looking omgodlish ships, not overgrown snubs. I kinda agree with what ruihu908 said, but raising prices/size wouldn't be bad.
Overall, however, Freelancer floats on it's own reality. Capital ships prolly aren't gonna get much bigger.
' Wrote:Increase their prices ? Sorry, it would just take the powertraders one more day then to get their cap and you can't increase the price enough to make it a true effort without getting into trouble with the amount of credits a char can have.
Making FL a full-time-trade-job for those who like to fly -and- RP a capship isn't a good solution, I reckon.
Make a BS require constant supply of essential stuff like oxygen. Make it take damage over time and have it require robotic components and ship hull panels to repair it. Producing battleship weapons and equipment should also require more stuff. Make it a requirement that a lot of manpower and credits must go into producing, maintaining and upgrading the BS.
Just. Like. A. Base.
Yeah, bring on the hate. Many people will dislike this idea so the chances of the above happening is close to, if not exactly, zero.

People will dislike it because it takes the fun out of flying a capitalship and makes it more like work instead of playing a game. This is a game. Flying ships of any type should be fun and not like micromanagement at the office.
If they make cap ships fly as slow as barges you won't ever see them in combat. The opposing fleet could simply just say "Hey look they got a battleship, well we know we're WAY faster than it, so lets just sit over here, on this side of the moon (or whatever). And there you have stand-offs, or battleships who simply cannot catch up to the fleet battle.
I know i'd use those tactics or some tactics to exploit their speed if battleships went down 25kph and took 5minutes to charge up to 90kph cruise engines. Oh and if it took 4 minutes to make a 360 degree turn on it the bombers would ALWAYS be able to line up torpedos on its 'fat' size. and never miss from 3.5k range.
If you wanted to make Battleships more 'realistic' as far as speed/manuverability do this:
A. Drastically make them turn slower, not anywhere near as drastic as a barge, but close.
B. Change their normal impulse speed to max out at like 60 lets say. Then a say.....2 Minute charge up for 240kph worth of cruise speed (kinda how the barge used to be, just 2 minuets instead of 5)
C. Double their armor. Yes. Double. I remember fighting 3 player GRN battleships, ended up taking one out while I was in my BAF Bomber, not one of them hit me once, ever. its too easy to dodge and take out battleships with bombers, not that that needs balancing as it is! But with all these other nerfs to the battleship its going to need some help with the armor. Oh and that was my first time ever fighting any player capital ships.
As it stands now my juggernaut battleship has the manuverability of a medium transport. I get through asteroid fields with about the same amount of hassles as one too. Also mind you the Juggernaunt and the Barge are the only large capital ships I have any experience flying/owning, maybe some of the others have a slower turn rate than the juggernaut, but I doubt it. (at least they shouldnt!)
Now this all being said, I personally don't agree with most of what I wrote. I think battleships are fine as they are, bugged out speed same as a heavy fighter and all. We're trying to balance a game, not real life.
The most balanced proposal I've seen so far is equipment damage on death (ofc, due to this several prices should be adjusted, so BSes with FG won't find itself requireing 2 times more repairs).
But this should be implemented towards all types of ships (not just capships), so, while bomber would require waaay less cash to repair it, it would still lose something on death.
The only problem with it is Connecticut/Training fights, but I guess it's possible to find a way around this.
As long as one person can fly a BS, there aint balance. Since devs will told you, like many times before, that there must not be a ship that can wtfpwnall cause that ruins the fun for the snubs, who love to engage and kill lone battleships.
Disco has no realism. 90 % of things make no sense. Dynamics, guns, economy, all broken.
Just ignore it all, go pew things and have fun.
Note - I flew 10 various battleships and I still have nine of them. Trust me, im first in line to see a major change towards BS being BS.

If said ship will be harder to maintain then other, lighter vessels, then I guess it IS possible to make it significantly more potent in combat?

Indeed not. The biggest ones are already causing some problems related to their size. Anything sleighted to be bigger then a RM BS in future models is going to get veto'd by me as lead modeler - the FL engine simply doesn't handle those properly.
