It is logical for anyone in that situation to defend their Role Play ally (even if that guy was being a complete idiot).
You're not going to find any kind of incredibly "different" Role Play in the middle of a fight...
This takes very simple, basic intelligence to understand.

Now that being said. IF indeed you think there is a way to convey the unique duality of this character during a fight like the one that happened. If you could give a reasonable example of how it could happen, I would consider working that in.
