Are Character Biographies Mandatory?

I'm not much of a writer and would rather RP my characters ingame by preference, [ altough if it is required of me I will of course produce something.]

IMO, the biography is important to keep track of your background and the basic psychology of your pilots. It is mainly for you and as a link for a recruitment. Otherwise, you're right better to RP ingame.
