Right, well, after the fiasco in that thread, and some other things, I posted a message in the BPS forums:
Quote:Hello, I'm Unseelie, from the Discovery Server community. Your people have been seen on our Server, and [BPS]Discovery (you're member) said that you guys would be joining up, and posting stories, etc. He also said you'd have a meeting, and asked some of us to show up, I was the only one who could make it. Unless I missunderstood something, you guys stood me up. Jilted bride at the alter for two hours...anyway, we've reports of some actions by your people that concern us, the Discovery Community, as well as a guy who claims to be on your side, but has a very bad rep, and is painting you with the same brush. I'm not here to make any judgements, just to ask you guys to get a bit of a presence on the Discovery.com forums and explain yourselves, and figure out a bit about discovery to prevent you from making such blunders as buying guns from the Kusari.
Welcome to disco.
Hoping that will lead them here, and get them integrated at least decently.
To any BPS (or any other clan, really):
You must understand that disco isn't much like most other servers, in my view. These forums are as much a part of disco as the server, possibly more. Time spent here is time spent playing the disco game, which is only marginally freelancer(and may become less so). It may not be fair, but we don't care where you've been, only what you do here, and we've been doing things our way for a very long time, and wont be willing to let you change...you'll have to fit in, you really will.
I want you to succeed here, but take that with a grain of salt. I, and many of my compatriots, are not particularly interested in your clan succeeding, or even joining. As a clan, I'm sure you have prohibitions against multiclanning, which we will encourage you to do. We mean no insult, no more than you would if you asked us not to. It works for us, in spite of failures elsewhere. It is a large part of what makes discovery work.
Imagine a soccer game: Two groups of children, 5 on 6, not a full match yet, are playing a game. 5 more come along, but instead of dividing up, and joining the other team, they want to play with three teams. This, of course, is quite possible, but it is much harder to integrate that extra team into the game. They would probably start over. That's almost exactly what a clan tries to do here, and its a nasty process. Kudos to you if you survive it, I'm just letting you know what you may be trying. Disco, as my signature indicates, is something of an anticlan, and has a history of tearing clans apart and spitting them back out.
That said, we would like you to prevail. Myself, I would much rather you split up, and join other clans, and just play disco the way we play it. That probably seems alien to you, but you seem very alien to me.
Most of all, remember, you earn our respect only here, and through no fault of your own, your predicesors have already torched some of the respect we would have granted you. We've had bad experiences, and come away scarred.
Welcome to disco. Its a wonderful place, and it literally saved my life.
Unseelie.
And I'll put my 2 cents in here too, cuz who knows, maybe people will listen to me:
1) [BPS] could exist as a special ops arm of the BAF. They could carry BAF Tag, but generic Military ID, to sorta emphasize their behind the lines thing.
2) I would prefer they just started QCRF characters, but I don't think they will favour that. Their own clan appears to have a long history, and I don't think they will want to give that up. Disco guys, put yourselves in their shoes. Also, there is no reason they can't have QCRF or BPA characters AND their BPS characters. That may a bit wierd to them, but that's how disco works, and multiple faction membership is pretty cool, once one is used to it.
3) They have got to learn the mod, and server. Until they do, they should hang out with QCRF and BPA, which will help them.
I wish to introduce myself before this thread goes further.
My name is Seb, i am 20years old, and now live in Sweden after moving from England to live with my girlfriend. Along with the remaining BPS players, we are all 'Vets' of the game, though somewhat retired. I for one started playing WoW after the death of NiMa.
My main character name is '8472', yes.. as in the Species8472 for any other geeks.;). I am the current 'Rear Admiral' within our clan, the Bretonia Protection Squadron, and have been a loyal member since around June 2005. Although our clan size is some what tiny at the moment, those who remain i have known from back in early 2004 when i first started to play FL. I am sure many old friends are here too, who i have met either via the NiMa or Jolt communities, who i would very much like to get playing with once again.
Anyway..
Regarding the BPS Clan meeting which had been scheduled to take place on Tuesday just gone, above Planet New London. On behalf of myself, and Admiral Chili, i wish to apologies for neither of us turning up. Admiral Chili was unable to be online at all for the majority of the weekend and this week due to personal reasons. As for myself, i had to attend a family BBQ which was organized in the afternoon of Tuesday. Having just moved to Sweden a month ago, i was unable to cancel, which i would not have wished anyway. I would very much like to speak to some of you in game to make up for my failure. Again, my apologies.
Back to the BPS..
It was my initial act of returning to Freelancer and to the Discovery server under [BPS] tag which lead to the reactivation of the BPS clan. We have all missed Freelancer, and after playing it for as long as us, who wouldn't? Although i have not been very active at all on my BPS character in game, i have spent a lot of time in untagged characters drifting along, absorbing the feeling of the server. Many hours have been spent within the various rules and the forums too.. damn, you guys write a LOT.
Though we have not had the best of starts, i urge you not to finalize your opinions about us just yet. I know you have the "Day1 on Disco is day1" approach, but i have to disagree. Experience of our scale does give an input into things. We have had years of experience both working together as a team, and as a part of different servers, both RP and PvP. I completely respect that Discovery is an RP server like no other, but with our experience i am more than certain we are capable of adapting and fitting in.
We do not wish to force ourselves upon you, neither do we wish to interrupt your built up RP. However, we do wish to be given a chance to join in. Freelancer is a dieing game which does not have years left in it, it is a well known fact. Surely more new life into any server is a good thing? We may well fall flat on our faces and fail like most of you have predicted, but do we not have the right to at least try? Every faction/clan on the server has been given the chance, all we ask is we have ours too.. and if we fail, nothing has changed for you.
I will communicate with Chili and Discovery and sort out our clan introduction post, as well as organising any other details, as soon as i am able to reach them.
It will be nice to get to talk to some of you at last, and hopefully ease the feelings towards us.
8472, absolutely you have the right to try. We're not trying to stop you from becoming part of the server, just trying to make you aware of some of the quirks.
I have been playing the game since it was first released, and have been active on Jolt, Void, UK Server, Warwicks, amongst others in my time. Coming here really changed my opinions on what I thought I knew about Freelancer. Disco is a completely different animal to any other server.
So, welcome to Disco! I hope you can find your place here, and look forward to seeing you in space.
I see some very encouraging posts about our potential role here on Discovery server.
Like the idea's mentioned about our role being adapted to a unit specialising in certain ZOI and combating certain factions.
Remember that we are familiar with players here from other servers and even a clan here (OPG) so it would be great if we could be accepted gradually and take on certain stances and relations in that way. Keep up these comments and idea's and I am very confident we can come to an arrangement with existing factions, while offering second characters to BPA and QCO until we get involved more.
At the same time I have also been very discouraged by some comments from people. Although Discovery remains the most popular server at present, and that should be respected along with the role play philiosophy here, it is not excuse to see bad attitiude from people.
Attitudes like 'Pah, no room for any more Bretonia military factions here..! Pfft' or ' Who the hell do they think they are! Barging in and disrupting our way...! '
Ok, I might be assuming the worst with one or two of you, but sometimes I have to.
We may be a clan with a long and winding history, but I can give you my assurance we always follow server rules as much as we can, admit mistakes when we make them and help contribute to server role play.
With regard to the missed meeting I apologise to all parties who attended and were 'stood up' :$ I had to take care of a friend in need at the time, but I don't really want to go into it here, this is a gaming forum.
A little more about me... I am Mat, 27 from Scotland. I have played Freelancer since it's early days too and have contributed mainly to Jolt (where BPS was originally founded by myself and K3) and the NightMare (NiMa) servers. The latter I was server admin and head modder until server closure recently, so I have a lot of experience with the game in general and in dealing with online issues.
You will see me online more in an advisory role to BPS as a somewhat ancient Admiral, playing where I can to make a positive difference.
We will try to arrange the neccessary meetings and formalities as they come. So I am in no rush to make a faction creation request anyway, not until I am confident and sure in the direction the clan is going on Discovery first. I urge those of you who are wary of BPS not to worry.
All clan/factions can feel free to have a representative visit the BPS forums 'Essential Links' area and post te correct means to communicate to you.. Website/forums etc. Also any other links you feel are important to any clan.
