I liked it as well, but the part where the Trolls throw a party in the Hobbit's house should be shortend in my opinion... Oh and: 3D 42 fps movies are a win...
"But, why, you idiot Max, why?", you ask me. Well, I will give your two arguments:
1. Once your get a degree in Visual Arts or direct your own movie, then you will earn the right to say what to cut and what not to cut.
2. This is the beginning, so it has to have some background, some story telling, it can't be all action-sword-wielding-orc-killing movie.

max, you are truly deserving of your self-nominated epithet. i applaud your self-awareness.
if i understand you right, you're argument is that no-one can have an opinion on cinema unless they went to university for three years, got drunk and chased girls a lot, and then did some cramming for the finals - FOR A MEDIA STUDIES COURSE?!
Media studies.... seriously? I went to three universities, and got a whole bunch of qualifications, and those were the guys without direction in life, and always partying. so, no, i don't agree with your argument, because is follows the authoritarian precept of 'if you learn something in a classroom, then you're automatically a better person'
but this pedogogic viewpoint excludes auto-didacts, amongst whom such luminaries as albert einstein and bill gates are numbered.
2. the beginning of the film was horrendously slow. the prologue at the beginning could have been worked into the story as they were travelling, in a socratean question and answer method.
also, supersonic rabbits. bit of artistic license there. I feel - my opinion, which is based on being an avid consumer of cinematographic productions - that when a film that is based on such a well-read and well-loved book diverges completely from the tale, it breaks the fourth wall and interrupts the suspension of disbelief that is central to the enjoyment of a fantasy epic.
I'm sure that were this ground-breaking novel to be released today, it would be edited far more closely, and would have been turned into a film far sooner. As it is, and you'll have to forgive me for digressing a little here, because I did study the representation of good, evil and the heroic struggle within the opus of Tolkien, the author has a tendency to introduce a plethora of ancillary characters on the basis of convenience, rather than necessity.
I liked it. And I'm kind of happy they didn't focus completely on the action, which is what I would have expected from most movies of its type made these days.
Compared to LotR, The Hobbit doesn't divert from the book as much. But then again, LotR is much longer than the Hobbit (bookwise) and they can't really cram it all into 3 movies, but still there were some significant differences between the LotR books and movies. The Hobbit, not so much. I'm guessing they'll be making two more movies for the hobbit as well, and make another trilogy.
But yeah, in my opinion, was damn good.
@Coin
Problem with supersonic rabbits, foo' ?
Huh!?
Yeah, thats what I thought.
Dun' mess with supersonic rabbits.
My dear friend,
I ran through the first half of the post and...meh.
I do not want to get into an argument, you can have your own opinion, but until you make your own movie, which will get attention, i think your opinion is = 0. Maybe the comparison will be a little too blunt, but it is like you are watching a boxing match and saying: "Well, he sucks." With my deep respect, I hope you are not one of those coulda-woulda-shoulda internet people. Oh, i just thought of another example: Someone presents your with a 3max ship model for Freelancer and you say: "This model is crap.", without knowing 3Dmax, design time it took, imagination, etc. (please don't go on bragging about your knowledge of design and 3d design IF you have such, it is just an example.)
Soul, i also liked the movie. Although, it was slow at times, the overall feeling i got from it is great. The flick is filmed in the same style, has the same flow and atmosphere and I am sure the next part will make up or, so to say, get it up to speed.
Merry X-mass to all.

Well, I don't care much if a movie like that is a bit long. Apparently its not good pacing or something, but I enjoyed it enough at and after midnight (Midnight release) so I'd say it is good.
