Discovery - PlanetFall

As some of you know, I am planning a ground-based combat system for Discovery. This is partially why I am leaving the FL section of the community. With help from (at this point, no one) I hope that I can actually (eventually) build a Discovery FL Stand-alone FPS on the Cube 2 Sauerbraten engine.

But for now, I've decided to use Halo Trial, downloadable here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

Halo Trial supports up to 16 players on a stable connection, and I've got few tricks up my sleeve to make its free multiplayer component a little more interesting than it first appears.

Of course, Roleplay for this part of discovery is going to be extensively onForum. It's kinda hard to RP when 5 people are shooting at you. Of course, ground rules stand: When the type bar is opened up, what comes out must be in RP. Unless this is you and your faction mates practicing, no "hey, ns" or "ty" or "*** ****** ****!!!!"

It is expected that you use, or attempt to use, proper military lingo, such as: "Affirmative, Rgr, Copy that, or GAH, sir!! I've been struck in me groin! Sirrah!"

You get the point.

In addition...

The official servers will not even be up if there are no ingame(Ingame, as in in the Discovery RP 24/7 Freelancer server) events to support it.

Since Halo Trial's only MP Map is Blood Gulch(a Box Canyon), combat will be landbased.

Until I come out with the Sauerbraten mod for Disco, this will have to do.


Oh, and regarding the poll, pick the name that you think would be best for the expansion's name.

Disco is a space-sim, so once you actually get to the ground Planetfall sounds the best and most appropiate.

I have heard of mods to increase the cap, but it results in server instability and massive lagginess.

I can't believe you included my joke titles and neglected to add "Discovery - Pistol Jumper"

I'm still dubious that Halo is the prime port of call for what you're attempting to achieve, a little close and personal and not exceptionally epic in scale. But I suppose I'm an RTS fellow.

I'm planning a test run of the server soon, particularly the RP content of the gaming.

I will need at least 2 Volunteers to play as Bretonians, and 2 volunteers to RP as Kusarians.

I will be there as a Bret.

honestly it'd probably be better to develop a mod for bf2142 or something than to use a halo trial which is going to be limited in functionality.

all in all the conclusion is that disco doesn't need antagonist factions, it doesn't need phantoms, it doesn't need nomads, it doesn't need coalition and it doesn't need many other things, no AIs, the game is hijacked by morons to confuse the game with their dickwaving generic competition games mixed up with troll-of-the-day.

not everyone has freelancer either, but plenty of people found their way here didnt they?

Any way you try it, you're going to have a difficult time making an entire ground combat version of this mod using a demo of halo or any other game - free has nothing to do with it. Trial versions of these games are extremely limited, and unless you have the source code for the game you arent going to be able to do much.
