On my Synth Foods trader Ive chosen to stick with a Large Transport rather than go up to a Train.
The question I have is what do you think is an appropriate number of crew and what are their functions on the ship RP wise.
Im hoping to write some RP stories related to the crew of Synth.Foods-Convoy|104 and would like to get peoples input on the number of crew.
My first idea:
1 command officer/pilot
1 navigations officer/co-pilot
1 weapons systems officer
2 weapons system operators (manning turrets or possibly groups of turrets)/ cargo loaders
1 payload specialist/various odd jobs
So that gives me a crew of 6.
Are there other jobs that Ive overlooked that Id need crewmen for?
I would assume that, due to computer and mechanical automation, fewer crew are needed on the large vessels than most players here believe.
For example, people keep saying "real life gunboats have 300 crew!!!" - while a lot of players here believe that the gunboats in the mod only take maybe one or two dozen at the most.
For a transport, I would assume few crew members are needed - primarily command and maintenance crew. You dont need a bunch of extra people performing redundant tasks on the ship, and the 'loading/unloading' jobs would be reserved for people working on the planets/stations you trade with.
Also, you listed:
Quote:1 command officer/pilot
1 navigations officer/co-pilot
1 weapons systems officer
2 weapons system operators (manning turrets or possibly groups of turrets)/ cargo loaders
1 payload specialist/various odd jobs
I'd double or triple that. If you think about it, realistically it would take days to make some of the longer trade runs in the game - do you really expect a single pilot, or a single nav officer, to stay awake that long? I'd say you'd have several crew members for each job so they can take shifts - either two per job for 12 hour shifts, or 3 per job for 8 hour shifts.
Yeah, I keep 20 on my Outcast Destroyer, about as many as is shown on the NPC Destroyers that float around Ibiza. Probably not the most accurate number, but... I don't really think about it. I have 5 crew on the LPI-Greedy.Donut, randomly. That's what I do: random numbers.
John Smith is a quiet guy, who doesn't really like compagny, other than deep space and some pilots...
He flies alone, helped by a huge amounth of computers and programs, and cannot fly and fight at the same time, 'cause flight and combat centers in Heavy Tanker are in different places, and both need a human to direct them...
OK for gentle RP, OK for gentle PvP too. What do you prefer ?
Hurk hurk hurk...

John Smith(independant trader, ex-contract killer on Manhattan)(Heavy Tanker)
DSE Reparship of mine has 2 crew members. Technician and his assistant (the assistant is actually way more clever:P)
GMG Kamchatka has 20 crew. 1 Captain, 1 co-captain, there are 6 pods for gas, so I put it six maintainance positions plus twice as much for another shift (maintainance, repairing, workers, anything). 4 Gunners, 1 guy on computer and 1 navigator.
The Heimdall has a crew of 3 members, consisting of the captain Albert Vierst, a technician and a general handyman, who is occasionally also the gunner:P
But the Raven, sitting lonely on that placid bust, spoke only
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered; not a feather then he fluttered--
Till I scarcely more than muttered, "Other friends have flown before--
On the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have flown before."
<blockquote>Then the bird said, "Nevermore."</blockquote>

I have 50 crew on my Outcast Destroyer, 50 crew on my Zoner Destroyer, 16 crew on my advanced train and 6 crew on my mammoth transport. I guess its just preference.
