These DDoS attacks made me think, perhaps if we had better communication as a community we could sort stuff like this out more easily?
For other communities I've been part of, DDoSers hop onto IRC to talk about how great they are blah blah blah. We can sort things out if we come to a stand still.
Or, we can find out who did it and punish the bugger.
And generally, I think our communication is a tad poor.
So it might be a good idea if:
-DiscoveryGC as a whole had an IRC Channel
-The communication channel had it's own RP IRC channel
-Perhaps individual factions could have their own IRC?

If all goes well, I'll happily b-, I mean, Op the admins.
We had a guy that tried to make the whole skype users switch to IRC a few months ago because it was "better".
The players chose to do it this way, if some want to use IRC, it's their choice. If some want to use Skype, it's their choice. If some want to use MSN Messenger, it's their choice.
The majority of the discovery community chose to use skype and built most of it's internal functions around it. Considering the community started in 2005, you'll have a very, very hard time getting anyone to switch. At best all you'll create is another optional chatroom just like the skype chatrooms with 100+ people that existed and never worked.
Also if I recall quakenet will show the ip of the closest internet relay from where you connect to everyone in the chat unless you register with them and do that command to log and hide it.
nah, looks like these topics starting to appear every week
i wasn't the guy who "tried to make the whole skype users switch to IRC", i tried to make some kind of general lounge for players and rooms for each faction, so if anyone wants to ask something small fast (or ask for cooperation, or signal etc etc) just hop in and write and get reply in 2-5 minutes from others idling here.
I also got a spare VPN which holds now-abandoned IRC server: u-net.in / irc: irc.u-net.in, which hides everyone's IPs and well, everyone can make its own chat room with optional passwords and stuff, but seems like no one wanted to use it.
I can do IRC module for FLDSW if someone will show interest to the whole idea.
Also Jabber is good alternative too.
upd: @Loken: wat? Closed protocol with some "points" and only one client (which looks sh~...badly with try-chinese fonts and drowning kid on the background)?
