Reflecting an ongoing attempt to reform Rheinland’s fleets towards lighter, faster and cheaper formations, the Carrier Saar was constructed in 827 AS. As Rheinland’s political situation spiralled out of control, the Ministry of Defence intervened to appoint a senior command staff of its own choosing, overruling the decisions of the potentially disloyal Rheinland Military. The Military-backed Imperial coup erupted mere weeks later, as the Saar completed final outfitting at Oder Shipyard. The carrier’s loyalist crew responded immediately by launching fighter squadrons to evacuate key Federal officials from Planet New Berlin before they could be detained.
In the chaos of the opening hours of the Civil War, the Saar successfully retreated to Frankfurt, where it linked up with the Battleship Bayern. Upon depositing its passengers on Planet Weimar in Thuringia, it regrouped with other Federalist fleet elements. The Saar was deployed as a mobile fleet carrier, projecting squadrons to harass Imperial forces across New Berlin, Frankfurt and Hamburg. Its fighters proved to be such a hindrance that it is alleged the Emperor announced a significant reward for the carrier’s destruction. Saar avoided any serious damage during the war, despite a number of inconclusive clashes with the Battleship Schwerin.
As a part of the negotiated peace settlement of the Holstein Accords, the Carrier Saar was formally transferred to the MND’s command. It is now stationed in the Westerwald nebula, where it provides perimeter security for the Sector-7 and Sector-9 security zones.

Liberty’s President Jacobi has taken a leading role in mediation between Rheinland and the other Houses, with the Provisional Rheinland Government offering a message of condolence to the Kusari people for the actions of the toppled previous regime. Despite this, Kusari has remained resolute that no normalization of relations will be considered until full reparations are made for the devastation in Honshu and New Tokyo, and the many crimes Kusari alleges were perpetrated there. |

FULDA -- 801 -- With the disappearance of Chancellor Niemann and the installation of the Liberty-backed Provisional Rheinland Government, an immediate cessation of all hostilities has been ordered. Rheinland forces have begun withdrawals on all fronts. Reports from Kusari have confirmed that the Northern Fleet has retreated from New Tokyo and Honshu, however it has not returned to Rheinland or recognized the authority of the PRG. Government sources believe the fleet may have deserted, with Rheinland's remaining loyalist security forces being ordered to high-alert as a precaution against pro-Niemann coup attempts. |
