I don't post much on this forum, but I feel this needs my comment.
Asymptotic, if you can DL Discovery in 20 seconds... good for you. You must have a conn that places you in the top 1% of all internet users. For the rest of us... well, it takes a bit more time than that. Faster conns could be out of the question due to a myriad of reasons such as cost, lack of service, cost, and not enough demand in the area a person lives in, oh... and cost.
The idea of constructing your own bases for a mod does sound interesting, and I think you should try it. Take a few months off and write a mod where this becomes a viable choice for game play. I would be interested to see how it would work without constant updating of the mod via new releases of patches.

If you don't post much, can I have your Avatar...?
And very nice delivery!
And don't mind Asymptotic. We're getting those rough edges polished down gradually.
if you whant to build bases and stuf like that go to EVE were its all possible but this game is 5 years old be it still realy ausome game, it is stil a little daited now and CANT do that feesibly. sarry for the truth but i like hounesty
I see people are finally starting to get the idea.
FL is an old game, BUT people out there are still playing it, making mods for and even buying it when they can find it in the bargain bins.
One thing I try to do with most games I play that can be modded or have things added (vehicles, weapons etc) is have a go myself and most of the time I discover that it takes time to get it *RIGHT*, usually a *LOT* of time, which is unfortunately something people in this day and age just don't have too often.
As a case in point, I belong to an on-line club that is called the Emperor's Hammer and a small group of people decided to make a game called 'Imperial Alliance'.
The game has come a long way since it started being made, it's actually at the point where it can be played on-line, but it has fallen in a hole recently. The people who were/are working on it just don't have the time anymore, so it looks like the SP side of it could be a while coming.
Sound familiar?
BTW, I'm not going to post a link to the game, if you want to see it, PM/ e-mail me -OR- do a search for IA, I used it as an example, not an advertisement :P
I'd be willing to help with the mod. I just frankly don't know how to help! What programs are involved in system editing, ship-making, etc? What kind of help does the modding team need? I'd be willing to put in the extra time if a more player-interactive Discovery universe was the end goal.
www.lancersreactor.com - find the 'Modding Freelancer' section in the Freelancer forum, then there are a few 'Knowledge Base' like threads. Not so hard when you realize how. Any good idea helps I think (try keeping to common sense - i.e. no uber stuff).
If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God? - from 'Nightfall' by I. Asimov The Outcasts consider Siniestre Nube a sacred place for several reasons. Early explorers discovered a jumphole within the depths of the cloud that leads to a strange world of ringed stars and strange craft. All ships in the burrial ground are placed facing that hole to honor the Alien Spirits. - An Outcast rumor
