I'm wondering what the precise rationale is behind the cruiser restriction on the Freelancer ID.
Gunships, bombers and fighters are essentially military vessels. The "civilian" or "open market" vessels are a notch or two weaker than their house counterparts, but they are nonetheless built for combat. Freelancers currently have access to the beforementioned vessel classes.
Would it be farfetched for a successful freelancer to purchase and maintain a light/medium cruiser (1.4 - 1.8 mil core)?
"Realistic" purchase options are narrow atm: Zoner Q-Ship and the Rheinland Pirate Cruiser. The Corvo would be probably off the table (see infocard). The best option would be a generic civilian cruiser (i.e. the old Talarac).
I'd rather call her a basic cruiser, or something like that. The words "civilian" and "cruiser" don't go together too well.
The problem will be a lot of FLs entering the Houses with their cruisers, which are capital ships. The "problem"... Personally, I have nothing against more blues.
It would kill piracy, though. Even if you had a pirate cruiser, the transport would manage to get away, if you intend to survive.
There's a discussion here about possibly converting the Corvo into a hybrid gunboat-cruiser "Research Frigate" for civilian use, as it will still be classified as a gunboat for ID purposes. Might want to try there.

This is the sort of thing I assume you could attempt to SRP. An existing type of Cruiser built for a civilian party for, uh, Civilian needs and purposes.
I don't really see the need to let everyone and their dog cruise around in Cruisers, which will inevitably happen if the FL ID is given access to them.

Yeah, I remember reading this. Interesting enough, if you're aiming for researcher roleplay.
I'm suggesting a true cruiser, which has a at least a light cruiser core. Doesn't have to a be a pvp-powerhouse, but not a steel coffin either.

This is what cruisers are supposed to be more-or-less equivalent to in this game. Do you see civilians in real life requesting permission to 'drive' those around?
I think it's a step too far, really. We may have civilians using military technology everywhere, but cruisers that normally require a highly trained military crew to operate seem just a little too far-fetched.
And uh, game-mechanics wise, people are bound to be attracted to these things and before long our already twisted in-game experience full of Ranseurs in Liberty will be further messed up by civilians piloting (generally -illegal-) cruisers all over the place 'because they can'.
If you have a really, really, really have a good reason for this in roleplay, I would like to once more suggest an SRP. If you don't have a really, really, really good reason to have a civilian commanding a massive warship, then maybe it shouldn't be a thing at all.

Not a huge fan of SRPs in situations where they're not really needed.
If the freelancer ID got opened to light/med cruisers, there would be the initial rush to try out a cruiser. Then the level of usage would self-adjust over time.
Some freelancers/pirates/privateers/whole sort of independents using military gear - okay, we as well have mercs in real world using gear same as ones on employment of even the best equipped militaries in the world.
However gunboats are stretching it as far as it can get and in my opinion it is suitable final line before diving into realms of SRP. I guess that in as dangerous space as freelancer universe provides, some rich people could obtain a simple gunboat or maybe even faction one with their blessing for significant ammount of work done on behalf of said faction. Those 'boats are propably meant to be produced and used en-masse with intention to keep running and maintenance costs low...
We have absolutely no need for anything civilian that has firepower greater than Kusari Explorer. If some freelancer is capable of justifying possession and capability to deploy and field a cruiser - that's what SRP are for. To my knowledge there was precedence with Mandalorian Mercenaries owning a Storta.
They are already thinking about making the Corvo open to everyone... You want the Fearless too? I dunno man. At this rate Zoner ID and Freelancer ID will end up merging
