Born not long after the Liberty's landing on Manhattan, Sarah Ryan was primarily a child of relatively lucky upbringing. Her father's service during the Exodus helped to secure her relatively stable childhood from being chaotic and unguided. She received a quality military education, but was an unusually quiet child during her young years. Many of her friends were fellow quiet types, and what friends she had didn't number anything past single digits.
During her teenage years, she was the subject of a small investigation involving the death of an Alliance politician. While the lead on her went nowhere, she was suspected of having supplied information as to the politician's location prior to his demise. While she firmly claims that what involvement she had was fabricated, what evidence against her was soon found to be too much trouble to pursue.
Adulthood
Ms. Ryan was admitted into one of the Alliance's most prestigious military institutions, quoting to 'want to follow in her dad's footsteps'. Her reasons, regardless of merit, were nothing compared to her determination in seeing to her goal. She passed most tests with solid colors, and passed what others with marginal results. With insistence from her father, she was admitted and enlisted in the Alliance Marine Corps, soon excelling at long range scoped rifle training and close range pistol marksmanship. She'd made top marks in accuracy exams and equipment demonstrations, becoming a fluent speaker in the lines of sharpshooting and stealth.
Her military career, while turbulent and full of controversy (most regarding her distaste for one specifically sparky cadet), was given top merit, and she'd reached the rank of Master Sergeant before the end of her twenty sixth year.
Medical Dilemma
While Ms. Ryan was a no doubt experienced individual, there was one instance where even her training seemed unfit for the untamed wilderness of Manhattan. Her usage of brush to scout and retain concealment was a tried an true tactic, and was commonplace among the recruits she'd helped train alongside her CO. She'd made several close calls in regards to local wildlife, most of which were still undocumented, and in one particular instance, she had received a bite on her arm. While the species of the animal remains unknown, it's poison that it injected into her body was closely resemblant of cyanide, mixed with an organic compound that baffled even the smartest of the Alliance's scientists.
Most of the staff that worked on developing an antidote for the poison thought her a goner, and simply paid their last wishes to her as they left to focus on other, more promising work. Had it not been for an epiphany by Ryan, it would've been likely that she'd have died from her injury.
Past to Present
The idea was hatched to use a cryogenic tube to freeze her, and await for the day where the poison that she was afflicted with could be neutralized with an antidote. While she had thought up the idea in the first place, Ms. Ryan was not fully supportive of the thought. Words from her family and what friends she had, both inside and outside the Alliance Military, soon changed her tone, and she was granted her final day to give her goodbyes before being sealed and frozen in cryo.
It wouldn't be until 823 A.S., a full 779 years after she was sealed, before she was unfrozen. Her ailment was soon cured, and she was rescued from the poison that would have undoubtedly killed her. While she knew that her parents, younger brother and friends were long passed, her training and determination to keep going helped her to continue along with her life. What equipment she was left with was still usable, and her training was still fresh in her mind.
