Read and agreed. Do remember though, that we are on the internet, and t is well documented that anonymity plus an audience produces trolls and jerks. Plus there's the people who are just jerks IRL and bring that to the server as well.
I try to follow the "make it fun for everyone" school of thought while playing. I even do nice things like reducing my pirating tax, getting fleeing people get away, and losing voluntarily once in a while. All for the benefit of creating a fun and entertaining roleplaying server.
It took me a while to read it, sorry, a bunch of chats were beeping in my ear.
Well said. I of course agree, I think everyone should strive to be "giving" and flexible to the needs of others in their RP if they are not already. However, there will always be those that dont. You see the same thing in real life with such people as greedy corporate moguls, people who cut in line, people who drive in the carpool lane with one person in the car, etc, etc. There is nothing to be done about it really, other than to try and reason with those that are selfish like this and if they dont listen, then try and give them as little of what they want as possible.
Overall I have seen much less of this thing here than on any other online game I have played where it is possible. I mean greifing, or intentionally aggravating other players, is basically a rules violation here that can get people banned.
In terms of whether it is moral or not, I would say that those who play like this are at a pre-conventional level of moral development. It is not immoral for them because it is not part of their moral code, and i doubt that any random online person will be able to change that in most cases. Still, it doesnt hurt to try, some people just havent thought about it, or dont want to. It is un-ethical in this community,m I think that we can say for sure, but those that do it probably arent heavily involved with the community as a whole.
In conclusion, if you are a conscientious player, always try and keep this in mind, and if you run into those that arent, try and teach, not preach.
You know, I would have thought that after you talked to Zelot about this, like he said he was doing so that you could get this out, you would have at least had the courtesy to pm something further like this about our interaction to me instead of bringing it into open light.
Simply put, to explain what happened, I caught Epyon the Bored in Munich on my Phantom. He attempted to run. I killed him.
I certainly do not indulge in Ethical Hedonism, as you technically put it. If you believe so, then I do think you should take another look at our interaction. If I had only wanted to enjoy my own RP for my own benefit, I would have given you the bare minimum required to destroy your ship. If you would be so kind to notice, I gave you several lines of RP (by my mistake I did not screenshot it). When you did not respond to any of them, I lobbed a Supernova into your shields. When you responded with "Playing like that is not encouraged" you issued an in-RP challenge to me: one to challenge the strength of your ship and captain.
I did challenge your ship and captain. I lobbed another Supernova into your shields, dropping them, and responded to your challenge with a verbal rebuttal to your challenge. This is where your RP stopped. This is where you chose to run and dock with the Frankfurt Jump Game.
You chose not to continue RP. You chose to run. I find it funny to say that you encountered minimal textual interaction when you chose the path to discontinue that. There were a plethora of ways you could have responded which would not have resulted in the outcome of our interaction. Instead, you chose the challenging path, and faced the consequences of it.
Of course, that is how it is. Pirates always have to write the novel. Traders are only there to run and make basic decisions. You were right, to a degree, when I talked to you ingame. There is no way for anyone to see our characters develop if there is little textual interaction. There was no way for you to see that Pitchfork has adopted Dark Blossom as her role model because there was no way for me to bring that light to your character. This is not necessarily anyone's fault; it's the fault of the mentality currently on the server. That is, the mentality that traders only have two options: run or die.
Had you not ran, we could have engaged in much more meaningful RP and your character may not have had to play "Kittes and vacuum," as its been dubbed by my character's role model. There is nothing really more to say. Had you not ran, the encounter would have been different. I'm sorry that you feel so wronged by our engagement, but, what has happened happened. I really wanted to write more, but, I have to leave the computer for a bit. I did mean it when I said have a nice night. Please do.
[8:32:45 PM] Dusty Lens: Oh no, let me get that. Hello? Oh it's my grandma. She says to be roleplay.
[12:49:19 AM] Elgatodiablo: You know its nice that you have all that proof and all, Bacon... but I just don't believe you.
No offense, but behind the philosophical arguments and the whole thing about two schools of thought as motivating roleplay, I see your post as a bitch post, about how you got blown up, and how you are angry about not receiving the RP that you expected.
I sympathize with you. It's happened to me too.
But, quite frankly, I would be surprised if anyone on this server would be able to meet each others standards of "Utility-Motivated RP," since everyone's standards are different.
So of course, let's IP-ban everyone whose RP does not meet your standard of roleplay. Of course, knowing you, that is not necessarily what you want - I'm stating an exaggerated example. But here is a clarification of why you may have been surprised by the harsh RP that you received, RP that you felt was very hedonistic and selfish, and in other words, "not nice."
Quote:A fact:
- Discovery Freelancer is not a MUD, or a Multi-User Dungeon, where the only interaction between players is in the form of textual speech and description, and on occassion, ANSI art. It is a visual game that relies heavily on visual interpretation. Roleplay is not defined by textual interaction alone. Your actions matter.
As a result, when you started running, you RPed. And that was fine on your part. It is totally within RP for you to start running. But when you do that, you are essentially conveying to your opponent: "F*** you, I'm getting out of here."
RP doesn't have to be hours on end long every single time you do it. It's just like RL. It can be simple brushes of coincidence, and short, brief, and to the point.
So, yes, complain about being blown up, but don't complain about why or how your "killer" was motivated to do so. Because at that point, it's not really about RP and the game anymore. It's about bashing that person.

Johnny_Haas: why you shoot criuse speed rockets?
He was a phantom. He wanted to 'play' with me and the 1600 people on board (They look like such excellent playmates, he said). He fired multiple supernovas into my shields, not only lowering them to less than fifty percent but removing them entirely and causing hull damage, which certainly constitutes an attack under the rules. You engaged me, and do you know what that tells me, when your ID explicitly forbids you from demanding credits or cargo? That you have no intention of further textual RP. You are going to blow me up whether I like it or not, and that is my cue to stop trying to provide you textual RP and run for my life, which is what any sane person is going to RP when they know they have no chance of survival. You're entirely correct - this IS a bitch post. I'm bitching because I got blown up and I wasn't given a way out, providing a fix for another player entirely at my expense. There was no pirate to pay, and there was no way to talk my way out of getting destroyed, and I think that's just dumb. I've tried to RP characters like that three times, and you know what? It doesn't work. They don't go anywhere. They get fixed in a rut. They go out and do the same thing, every time, and it doesn't give anybody anything but death. So, how do I deal? I try to express my issue in accepted academic terms and say why I think that it is freaking stupid that I got blown up, and how it pertains to gameplay as a whole.
EDIT:
Quote: Remember this: Spaceship game.
I know, right? Alas, this spaceship game is one I am heavily invested in, and I think it's being played wrong, which means that, since I care, I'm going to complain.
