I might not be ingame atm, but that hasnt stopped me from coming up with ideas.
So now im going to tackle the issue of carriers.
In RL they are just big ships that carry fighters
So my thought is, is there anyway we can get them to carry a compliment of NPC figthers?
My idea is create a missile launcher that fires a special kind of fighter for carriers, but the missile is an NPC controlled fighter, that will act as an NPC fighter. that can be destroyed
Is that even possible?
Now secondly with carriers, THey should not be able to carry battleship weapons. Why? because they carry fighters, and normally only have Flak cannons, or a phalanx battery (for those of you who dont know what that is, its basically an automated minigun/AA missile defense system). So they shouldnt carry BS weapons, but rather have custom flak cannons. and maybe one or two Anti-capital guns

i agree that - if you compare a carrier to a modern 20th century carrier - it makes more sense for them to be defensive against fighters ( a massive amount of fighter turrets would be nicer ). but since their primary purpose is impossible to include at a reasonable amount of work or disadvantages - that means carrying fighters - they are the same that any other capital ship is : a large fighter
another problem with carriers is that the dreadnaughts / battleships are both, battleships AND carriers. so there is hardly a use for a pure carrier. so - if it was possible for playerships to "spawn" npc patrols ( which is not possible ) - then allmost every battleship should have the ability.
In the X-Wing series you could spawn ships with a mission editor (extensive experience here) and have NPC's come from the ISD's like they're supposed to.
Sadly, this would probably kill the server. Imagine, if you will, 3 carriers arriving into battle, each spawning a squadron of fighters...that's 36 NPC's, in one engagement, that the server has to now control. Poof, server crash.
That's one of the limitations you'd have to deal with. Another is what type of fighter are you "shooting?" Now as fun as it would be to see a StarFlea cannon, what (besides OORP) is to stop a person from mounting Bretonia fighters on their Liberty carrier...they are allies after all.
Add to that the code just isn't there. You don't even see NPC's launching from NPC dreads. I've seen them from bases, but not even the BS bases or the Liberty Rogue destroyer from NY. Anyone else?
Heh, i was thinking this exact thing only a few weeks ago. Make them like ammo, you cna carry say 5-10 of them at once and they "launch" and engage anything that's red to you.
It would add an entirely new aspect to the game though i highly doubt it can be done via ini editing ^^
The game engine (though possibly not with the disco mod(no real reason I can see why not, though)) does in fact support it.
As in, it has been done.
Look for a mod called Flack 77 (or 87, or whatever). They have done some things about it.
