Right. So, because of being prodded a few days ago, violently, by a few ideas... I got into repainting certain ship-skins. As it is right now, I have two copies of freelancer installed- The one I actually connect to discovery with, and the one I have solely for the modified paint-jobs.
I could go on with a longer explanation, but I'll keep this short and direct. There is no explicit statement against using modified paint-jobs for crafts- But there is a statement against using non-discovery-mod files. What I'm wondering is
A.) Do the skins fall under this rule?
and
B.) If they do not, are they permitted, or not permitted?
To be honest, I only really want an official reply on this- a players opinion is more likely just going to derail the topic, instead of getting an answer. >.>;
NOTE: The reason I'm unclear on this is that it doesn't change the ships overall shape... give any advantage in combat, etc etc. In effect, it's just a re-color, but it DOES change the appearance, because of that, and I'm wondering if that's allowed.
In short, modifying game files is only allowed when used to change the visuals which don't change or enhance any aspects of the gameplay.
If you want to retexture a ship, change an engine color, edit a starsphere, etc, go ahead and do it if you know you can do it right and you won't mess anything else up in the process. The anticheat only keeps track of the stuff that can effect the actual gameplay, so long as you keep those the same, it shouldn't be a problem.
(Although, certain changes like recoloring a ship texture to plain white to make it more visible and such, might become problematic, but purely aesthetic changes are fine.)

Actually, you're not supposed to use any retextures or remodels unless it's specifically approved by the admins. There's a thread full of approved visual mods somewhere.

You're not supposed to use any actual mods (The ones you should apply usin FLMM) apart from Disco, and the main reason for that is some of them change various .ini files as well, which can trigger the anticheat. Minor changes, long as they're purely aesthetic are completely fine. Cannon actually helped me get a couple of things right back when I was trying to edit a few starspheres, and he knew I was going to use it on Disco GC and he was fine with it.

So far as I understood from that topic, it was a place for mods that effected the graphics engine in and of it's self- That is to say, not WHAT was rendered (IE: Textures-, Star-spheres, coronas, planet and ship skins, etc...) but HOW it was rendered (More/less lighting under direct light, and how to interpret whether or not the ship has direct lighting on that face, code interpretations of positional rendering, Etc.)
Still not entirely sure on whether or not that, and section 2.1? or so apply to paint-jobs, but currently err'ing on the side of caution.
EDIT: Yeah, it's 2.1, specifically this bit:
The Rules Wrote:2.1 Following actions are considered cheating on server:
- Using non-Discovery mods, speed-related and loot-related mods especially, as well as using modifications that improve stats of items and ships;
Because any re-skin I were to do would most certainly be unofficial, there for, by nature non-Discovery, but it doesn't mention a whiff' about appearances. So my little bit of confusion poked it's head out.
Well, lots of people use different sound files, so as long as all you're doing locally is changing a paint scheme, shouldn't be any issue.
You're not changing any of the actual wireframes and/or hitboxes on your local machine - which would (be one of the) cause(s) for the anti-cheat to kick in. It's not an actual mod per se, where you're making the HUD shift or anything like that, if I'm understanding you correctly.
Actually, having different color schemes available would be VERY helpful, especially for those of us who are or have some red-green color blindness. It's sometimes a real pain in the butt to see the red on the screen - making the color for the 'x' a nice bright yellow would be helpful. Not an aimbot, but actually allow the aiming point to be visible. (And people wonder why I suck at combat - hell, I can't hardly SEE how to aim, it's amazing I last as long as I do sometimes.)
Personal, ex-admin opinion - changing color skins locally is not a problem. Anything else - yeah, that's a problem.
Edit: Killa, I could make a couple of snide comments because I read things you made in other threads. However, I won't, simply suffice it to say that I can at least agree at times with Ryoken. You're just being obnoxious - otherwise Del wouldn't have had to close the congrats thread. (Yeah, I know it doesn't belong here per se, but seriously - quit being so darned negative. You're giving Oddball some bad vibes, Moriarty, with all that negativity, man... )

The problem is, Agmen, we had a bunch of skin and model fixes for our SCRA ships. Purely cosmetic. But we had to wait for approval to use either one.
And there's also the thread I linked, too...
So Drakor, talk to Cannon first, it'd be the safest bet.
I say dont do it. I have been banned for using modified textures on my Krakens, and it was very hard and painful thing to explain it to Cannon, i'm not using it now, Damn cosmetics are not worth the risk...
