A life of stories

The story starts with the birth of a young boy, not really someone special, but he had a lot coming to him. Patrick Poole was born and raised on Freeport 2, his parents were normal workers, his mother a administrative assistant and his father the assistant manager at the stations commodity warehouse. While growing up, Patrick’s father started taking him to work and from an early age was taught how to manage the warehouse. When Patrick turned 12, his father started to give him some responsibilities, it started with stocks of office supplies, but over the years he became a valuable part of the workforce.

During his childhood Patrick never left the safety of the station and only knew space from the stories people told him. The only place he could actually have a good view of space was from the traffic control tower, where he obviously was not allowed to be. Patrick’s father woke him up one night, he was excited and a bit nervous, but he told young Patrick to get up, be quiet and follow him.

Patrick: Where are we going dad? Why did you wake me up in the middle of the night?
Jonathan: Shush, be quiet son, I want you to see something special but you have to be quiet!

Patrick kept quiet and followed his father through the dark corridors, even though the station was always active, it was still very calm and peaceful at night. They walked for 10 minutes, until they arrived at a stairwell

Jonathan: Ok, here are the maintenance stairs to the top of the traffic tower. We are going to sneak in there but you have to promise not to tell anyone...anyone! Not even your mother!

Patrick: What?! Really?! I can go into the tower? That’s awesome dad... THANK YOU!

Jonathan: Shush! be quiet, I don’t want to get caught. Come one son, the security should be down now.

They took the stairs all the way to the top, when they finally reached the top, Patrick froze to the ground, staring outside.

Jonathan: Wonderful isn’t it, this is why I brought you here. It’s the most beautiful place in the entire station. The only thing even better, is actually going into space.

Patrick: ….. Ihh It’s..... It’’sss amazing... *he takes a big breath” This is the best present anyone could ever give me! Thank you dad, it really is beautiful, I never want to leave here. Can I come here more often? I just have to see it more!

Jonathan: I’m sorry son, but you can’t, I had to call in every favour I had to make this happen. But it’s worth it too see the smile on your face. Happy 15th birthday son

Patrick: Thank you dad! Thank you thank you thank you sooooooooo much! *gives his father a big hug*

Jonathan: It’s okay boy, we have to get going, the security camera’s are coming back on in 2 minutes, so we have to hurry.

A few days later, at the Poole residence

The past few days were busy, almost everybody that worked in the warehouse came by for the boy’s birthday. All those people from the warehouse, they were as close as family, it was like this every birthday, everybody was always in a good mood and enjoyed the parties they had together.
Patrick was well known and liked by pretty much everyone, the only two people that didn’t like him much were the two security guards that stood just outside the warehouse office. They were the target of the vast majority of Patrick’s practical jokes, from buckets of water on the doors, to a strong adhesive on the floor where the guards stood. Although nobody ever got hurt, the guards always acted as if the world was ending, which gave Patrick more reasons to think of new pranks. Since the boy not only pranked the guards, but also did a lot of good and valuable work, his father was always extra lenient on him.

Years passed and Patrick was promoted to assistant manager while his father was promoted to manager. The place ran like clockwork, but Patrick started feeling as if he was missing something. At first, he thought it was the stress from the long hours, but when he took some time off and worked half the hours he used to, the feeling only grew stronger. It took Patrick a good year to figure out what he had to do, he asked his parents to join him in the lounge and to listen to what he had to say.

Patrick: Mom, dad, you know I love you both, but... I feel....I feel like I’m...... *sighs* missing something... I’m 20, I have tried a lot of different things on the station too see if I could get rid of the feeling, but nothing worked. I think....I think I want to go, that I want to leave this station and see what is out “There!” I feel it calling to me, it’s begging me to find it’s secrets, it’s mysteries. I have to leave, please, don’t be mad at me, but I think I want to leave and explore Sirius for myself. To find my place, to feel complete.

Katherine: Patrick, it is your life, if you want to go out into space and find a place for yourself there, then you should do it. Just remember that you will always have a home here, no matter what you do, or where you have been, you will always have a home here.

Jonathan: I was afraid of this, ever since we went on our sightseeing trip *wink* Please be safe my son and like your mom said, you’re always welcome here, so don’t be a stranger and visit us from time to time. I have a small gift for you, I saved a few hundred credits a month ever since your 15th birthday. Take this credit card, there should be plenty of credits for a freighter for you and don’t try to buy anything other than a freighter or transport!

Katherine: Yes, that is a great deal Jon, please Patrick be smart and take a secure and safe ship. We want you to be able to come home again, so please, listen to your father.

Patrick: Alright, thank you very much mom and dad, I saved a few credits myself so I will make sure that whatever ship they have, will be reinforced. Thank you for being so understanding, I was really afraid that you wouldn’t understand.

Patrick went straight to the launch pad, to find any pilot that would take him to a used-ship dealer. It did not take that long as Patrick expected, while he was talking to random pilots, a junker pilot walked towards him and tapped him on the shoulder.

Junker: Oi, boyo, I hear you want to get your hands on a second hand ship, do you know what you want to get your hands on?
Patrick: Well....no not really... I know I want a freighter or transport, but apart from that, I have no clue. Maybe you can help me decide, I have 60,000 credits to spend on a safe ship.
Junker: Well boyo, we might have something you’d like back on Rochester base, you’re welcome to hop aboard my CSV and go see for yourself.
Patrick: Great, thanks, I’m ready if you are.

Several hours later, Rochester Base, New York system

Shipdealer: Right, Mr. Poole is it, you want a second hand freighter or transport. Well, here is what I have *opens hangar doors* take a look and tell me if you find something you like.
Patrick: *Gasp* That are some mighty fine ships you have there sir, hmm let me take a look.

He walks around a bit, checking out all the ships in the hangar, some look brand new, while others clearly have been damaged by some sort of weapon. Suddenly Patrick stopped in front of a Liberty Rhino freighter, it looked like it was used, but was still in good shape.

Patrick: How about this one? What does this one cost me? And if I take this one, can you upgrade it with some decent shields, some defensive weapons and maybe some extra reinforcements on the armour?
Shipdealer: Well, I can put some new shields on this one, the guns and turrets that are on it, are the best you can get for that Rhino and armour... Well I might be able to reinforce it, but I doubt it would be worth the credits. So all in all, I can get it ready for you, for say... 45,000 SC.
Patrick: That sounds great, but 45,000 credits, can’t you take something off that price, or is it a fixed price?
Shipdealer: The best I can do for you is...say...43,500 and then you’re practically stealing from me.
Patrick: Well, alright, you got yourself a deal, if you put your crew to work, we can get a drink in the bar to celebrate the purchase of my first ship.
Shipdealer: Now that sounds like a great idea! Johnson, Peters, get that Rhino checked and ready to launch, put in a new transponder and replace the shield with one from our stock.. Let’s get to it Mr Poole, we got some liquor to drink!

Seven days later, Planet Denver, Colorado system

Patrick had been working for his father once again, as soon as his new freighter was ready, he went back home to show it to his parents. When he wanted to leave Freeport 2, his father called him back and made an offer to supply Freeport 2. All he had to do was bring some passengers from Freeport 2 to Planet Denver and pick up some consumer goods and pharmaceuticals to bring back. It was a great way for Patrick to learn the ways of a understanding how transporting goods worked.

It was a busy time for Patrick but the credits started coming in, he felt good about what he was doing and even felt that he was doing a useful service. It didn’t take long for that to change and Patrick was heading towards a tough life lesson. He left Planet Denver with his hold full of goods and plotted his course back home, to Freeport 2. The auto-pilot was docking with the tradelane to the New York jumpgate while Patrick was filling out some paperwork for the delivery, until he suddenly was alerted.

Warning tradelane disrupted detecting 3 hostile vessels

Patrick switched the autopilot off and tried to run from the hostile ships, just as he engaged his cruise engines, another warning sounded *Warning: Incoming missile* He tried to evade the missile, but it was too quick, it disrupted his cruise engines and made his ship a big bullseye for the attackers.

Xenos pilot: Stop right there! Turn off your engines or be destroyed!

Patrick was scared beyond his imagination and did everything he was told, he cut his engines and opened a comm channel.

Patrick: Alright, please I’ll do anything you want, I don’t want to die! Please let me live!

Xenos Pilot: Don’t worry chump, as long as you do what you are told, you’re in the safest place you can be right now.

Patrick: Alright alright, whatever you want, but please don’t hurt me...

Xenos pilot: Ok, listen up, I will ask you some questions, you are going to answer me. If you don’t or if I think you are lying, you’re going to be in a world of hurt. got it? Good, first, Where are you taking those consumer goods?

Patrick: Of course, I’ll do anything, these goods are going to Freeport 2, everything I take from Planet Denver is meant for Freeport 2.

Xenos Pilot: Well, okay, what company do you work for?

Patrick: Company... company...no I’m not with any company, I was born and raised on Freeport 2, my father runs the commodities warehouse there and he asked me to do some deliveries for him, so that’s what I’m doing here.

Xenos pilot: Hmm, fine, now I am only going to say this to you once, dump your cargo into space and get the hell out of here before we change our mind!.

Patrick: Of course, thank you sir, thank you *sigh* thank you. I am releasing the goods now

*Cargo jettisoned*

He then engaged his cruise engines and ran like there was a entire fleet chasing him. Patrick hurried to the New York system and landed on Planet Manhattan to get some rest and a few drinks.
