Maybe I'm reading too deeply, but it's interesting how time and time again people resort to the Romans in one form or another to prove their arguments or justify their causes. "America is collapsing because Rome did"; the various Medieval states trying to establish a claim to empire, trying to succeed Rome; Russia's Third Rome in Moscow; Mehmed II calling himself Kayser-i-Rum. Appeals to Latin or pseudo-Latin semantics to prove points in everyday speech.
