So... I just got blown out of the sky after I didn't give a pirate 3 million within 20 seconds. Lack of RP aside, its been quite a while since I've been active on this server - is 3 mil the standard ransom these days?
Something tells me that time is measured subjectively.
But yeah - if a blue message is what some players are after, how fast you can pay won't make one bit of difference.
Honestly - no insult, but I suggest that you learn to laugh it off.
'Cause clearly, unless you were trying actively to escape, and failed to actually stop, it's not your money the guy was after.
TBH, when the guy actually immediately started counting down from 20 in chat, I figured the outlook for my continued survival wasn't good. I just wanted to check that I wasn't being unreasonable for refusing a 3 mil ransom as being too much.
Well if it was really that quick then you might be able to file. Thats up to you. Since /setmsg came back it seems they are looking at response time more, since its easier for someone to /1 and kill you after 20 seconds, they should give you way more time.
However 3 mil for that is totally acceptable in my books, but if you're broke you can try to reason with them (if possible), but with a full hold, you're looking at 2-3 mil at least, might just be luck he would accept no less than 3.
An outright refusal, no matter how much time has passed, means they can start blasting right away. Your best bet is to accept 'ok ok i'll pay' then try to deal a lower value, offer 2 mil cuz you're broke etc.
There used to be a 'piracy limit' long long ago.
Then there was war - ok, well, whining.
If your cargo is worth 10mil, then 10mil is fair for your life, no?
or 20?
"How much is too much?" is totally relative to the person giving/receiving the demand(s).
You're gonna run into belligerence pretty much anywhere you go, IRL too.
You're also gonna run into reasonable people who treat others with dignity, IRL too.
Log in and launch into space - walk out your front door - pretty much the same equation; it's a crap-shoot.
Not that it doesn't suck when it happens.
If you feel you were treated without respect, and unfairly, file a sanction - see what the Adminstm think.
But any pirate who makes it not worth your time to trade, is slitting his own throat, in terms of income.
Which leads me back to my original point, if someone is out to get bluemsg, then your RP/comfort/dignity isn't going to be worth a curly hair more in their eyes, no matter what you do.
Its fair, unfortunately you met a player who isn't there for an RP experience.
Wise man above me said it nicely.

A snippet from my soon-to-be-done piracy 101 video:

In order to become a decent pirate, you must become a decent trader and miner. The experience from those will help you not only maximize your profit, but also will make things a lot easier in the long run.
....
Knowing the popular trade routes and, when you think about it, any economy changes will help you decide on where to pirate. Knowing what goods go where will also help you in deciding how much money to ask from the trader. If you've went through a medium transport and a large transport during your trading time, you will also know how much you earn, which in turn will make your demands much more reasonable. By extension, as a trader and miner you will meet pirates yourself and learn how NOT to do things, if the encounter is a bad one.
